Who is Mark Kerr? The real fighter behind Dwayne Johnson's The Smashing Machine

Who is Mark Kerr?

Mark Kerr made his name first in wrestling and later in mixed martial arts (MMA). He was a dominant force in the UFC and became a well-known fighter in the early 2000s. Kerr had an impressive career starting with college wrestling, where he was an NCAA Division I champion. He also won medals in freestyle wrestling, including a gold and silver at the World Cup and a silver at the Pan American Games.

In MMA, Kerr found success in tournaments like the World Vale Tudo Championship, UFC, and Pride Fighting Championships. He even won the UFC 14 Heavyweight tournament title, proving himself as one of the toughest fighters of his era. In 2025, he was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame.

Why is Kerr’s life story interesting?

Despite his success inside the cage, Kerr’s personal life was full of struggles. Kerr married Dawn Staples in 2000, and the couple had a son together. However, they had separated by 2015. He also shared that he had struggled with drug addiction during the early 2000s.

After retiring from the sport, he had reportedly transitioned to working at a Toyota dealership. In June 2019, Kerr disclosed on a GoFundMe page that he had been battling disease affecting his nerves since 2016.

“He is walking contradiction of being this incredible fighter but also a really beautiful human being who was loving and kind and sweet. And in ways, broken and trying,” Johnson was quoted as saying about Kerr.
