Whether it is the Euro 2016 or any tournament, football fans unanimously love to hate referees. Seldom do fans sympathise with the job that referees have to do, especially seeing that most of their decisions have to be made in the heat of the moment. Portugal and Polish fans need to keep an eye out as the worst referee in the world will be officiating their Euro 2016 quarter-finals match. Serbian referee Milorad Mazic, the ‘world’s worst referee’ in 2014, has been appointed as the fourth official at the Stade Vélodrome. In some cases, referees do end up making mistakes. For example, the Netherlands team may not have participated Euro 2016, but they did have a representative in the form of Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers. Kuipers was officiating the Croatia-Spain group tie and failed to notice that the goalkeeper was moving forward and thus had an advantage when Sergio Ramos fired his penalty. He also failed to realise that two Croatian players were in the penalty box when the spot kick was being struck. Both of these reasons should have meant that the save made by goalkeeper Danijel Subasic was null and void. Naturally Spain demanded Kuiper’s exclusion. Spanish referee Velasco Carballo dished out 74 yellow card in 12 La Liga games and has been excluded from the quarter-finals of the Euro 2016. Italian referee Nicola Rizzoli was voted as the best referee of 2014. He looks to be the favorite to officiate the Euro 2016 final.
