ICC Women's World Cup 2017: Mithali Raj sets Twitterati abuzz after record-breaking feat

The Indian women's cricket team isn't going through the best of phases at the moment. After winning four games on the trot in the ongoing Women's World Cup 2017, and occupying the top slot in the points table for a bit, the Mithali Raj-led team seemed to have suffered a sudden slump, suffering back-to-back defeats against South Africa and Australia respectively.

However, Wednesday's loss to Australia, in which Meg Lanning and her team chased a modest 227-run target down with seven wickets to spare, wasn't all that gloomy an affair for captain Mithali, who added another feather to her cap.

Walking out to bat after the Indians lost Smriti Mandhana early, the 34-year-old scored a lively 69 off 114 balls, forging a solid 157-run second-wicket stand with Punam Raut (who incidentally scored her maiden World Cup ton). During her innings, Mithali became the leading run-getter in women's ODIs, going past former England captain Charlotte Edwards' tally (5,992). She then smacked a six down the ground a few deliveries later to become the first batswoman to get to the 6,000-run milestone in the format.

While Mithali's fan-count has been swelling in numbers in recent times, especially after her bold stance against the marginalisation of women's cricket, her latest feat will only command her further respect. Take a look at some of the reactions from cricketers, pundits and fans alike after her latest feat:

Earlier, Edwards held the record with 5,992 runs from 191 ODI matches with an average of 38.16. She scored nine centuries and 46 half-centuries during her career, her highest being an unbeaten 173 against Ireland. Mithali though, boasts of a fantastic average of 51, having hit five centuries and 49 fifties in a glittering career that is now 18-years-old.
