Two Frenchmen, one at Highbury in 2004 and one at Old Trafford in 2015. Against bitter rivals Liverpool. Cutting in from the left and flooring defenders before side-footing past the goalkeeper to score a sensational goal. AFP[/caption] For Anthony Martial, who scored a brilliant goal on debut against Liverpool on Saturday, the comparisons with Thierry Henry are not going to die down anytime soon. Signed from Monaco on transfer deadline day for a reported initial fee of £36 million ($55 million, 49 million euros) that even the United manager admitted was “ridiculous”, French striker Martial had been dismissed in some quarters as a panic buy. But the hefty price tag didn’t seem to bother the 19-year-old, who came on as a 65th minute substitute and settled one of English football’s heavyweight clashes with a devastating knockout blow. Van Gaal’s side were clinging to a 2-1 lead in the 86th minute when Martial took possession on the left, surged past Martin Skrtel and cut inside before calmly steering his shot into the far corner to cap a memorable United debut. And Twitter exploded with comparisons to the Arsenal legend and his strike at Highbury. Martin Tyler, on air commentator for Sky Sports, joined in the excitement as well, bellowing “Yesssss! Welcome to Old Trafford, Anthony Martial!” “When you make a goal like Anthony you cannot wish for more I think,” van Gaal said. Here are the two goals, back-to-back.

And here’s Martin Tyler now famous description of Martial’s strike.

Thierry Henry, with whom Martial is often compared, was similarly raw when he left Monaco for Juventus in 1999, but he was two years older, had twice as many games behind him and had already won a World Cup. Henry himself has described the deal as a “massive gamble”. Like Henry, Martial is a striker who started his senior career as a winger and he is similarly drawn to the left flank, from where he can cut inside onto his right foot and shoot at goal. While it is in fact quite ridiculous to place huge expectations on the youngster, the goal he scored and the similarities to the famous Henry effort - “Thierry Henry. Side stepping one, side-stepping two… that is brilliant, that is simply stunning. Genius at work and his name is Thierry Henry,” as the commentator put it then - will have satisfied many a United fan.
