India’s Vidit Gujrathi beat compatriot Arjun Erigaisi by 0.5 points to clinch the Vugar Gashimov Memorial Chess Tournament 2023 in Azerbaijan on Monday. Vidit finished the competition with 22 points, ahead of Erigaisi who finished with 21.5 points following 27 rounds of rapid and blitz games. Vidit went onto draw seven of his games while losing one and winning two games in rapid time controls. He finish second, behind Aydin Suleymanli of Azerbaijan with 11 points from nine rounds. Vidit, however, would go onto put up a fine display, clinching a score of 7/9 in the second round of the blitz tournament and eventually clinch the title. “Champion! Thrilled to make a comeback on the last day and win the Vugar Gashimov Memorial,” tweeted Vidit after his victory.

In third place was Hungarian Grandmaster Richard Rapport who finished with 19 points. Vidit had recently clinched the title at the FIDE Grand Swiss chess tournament in Isle of Man and had also qualified for the 2024 Candidates tournament.
