Dommaraju Gukesh recently became only the second Indian player to win the World Chess Championship title , after the legendary Viswanathan Anand. He beat China’s Ding Liren 7.5-6.5 in the 2024 World Chess Championship match, and ever since the teenager’s famous title win, fans have begun speculating the possibility of fellow Indian Arjun Erigaisi challenging Gukesh for the world championship title.
Vishy Anand on possible Gukesh vs Arjun World Championship match
During an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, Viswanathan Anand, a five-time world champion, was asked on the possibility of D Gukesh vs Arjun Erigaisi World Championship match. To this, Anand answered: “There is a 5-10% chance of it to happen."
The World Chess Championship match between Gukesh and Liren was a closely-fought affair . Gukesh began his campaign on a losing note, but bounced back with a draw and a win . That was followed by seven consecutive draws, before Gukesh won Game 11 and Liren won Game 12.
The scores were tied 6.5-6.5 going into Game 14, and while it seemed like the contest would go into tiebreakers, a blunder from Liren in his 55th move eventually led to Gukesh being crowned world champion.
Like Gukesh, Arjun Eriaisi has also enjoyed a successful 2024. He won the individual gold medal at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary, where he clinched 10 points in 11 games. Earlier in December, the 21-year-old became the second Indian, after Viswanathan Anand himself, to surpass the 2800 Elo rating mark.
The chess player from Warangal also won the WR Chess Masters Cup, Stepan Avagyan Memorial and Menorca Open titles.
Arjun will next be seen at the 2024 World Rapid and Blitz Championships in New York, which will be held from 26 December to 31 December. Gukesh has decided to skip that tournament.
