Germany edged into the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the 17th time in 18 appearances, battling past an inspired Algeria side. The Germans had to work extremely hard to win, and were pushed well into extra time, when they were ultimately saved by goals from Andre Schurrle and Mesut Ozil. Algeria pulled a goal back but by then it was too little too late. Amid the intense battle however, there was a funny moment. Germany were awarded a free-kick outside the 18 yard box after Algeria’s Sofiane Feghouli was penalised for a handball. [caption id=“attachment_1597755” align=“alignleft” width=“380”]
File picture of Germany’s Thomas Muller. Reuters[/caption] What transpires next is absolute comedy. The Germans line up for the free kick, Bastian Schweinsteiger at first dummied the kick and then ran clockwise. Thomas Müller was lined up next and two steps into his stride, he tripped quite comically. Müller to his credit, recovered and quickly ran towards the Algerian wall. The ball was finally kicked by Toni Kroos only to land it smack into the wall. Fail. There are some suggestions that Müller’s ‘fall’ was no accident and that it was done deliberately to confuse the Algerian opposition. But if you see the video it seems like a definite fall over. One wonders how Algeria wall managed to stay focused rather than bursting out in laughter! Check out the vidoes below:
