The deadline for verdict in Vinesh Phogat’s appeal for a joint silver has been extended once again, this time to 16 August at 6 PM local time (9.30 PM IST) by the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). The verdict in the matter was expected to come out on Tuesday (13 August).

“By application of Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules for the Olympic Games, the President of the CAS Ad Hoc Division extends the time-limit for the Panel to give a decision until 16 August 2024 at 18h00 (Paris time),” CAS’s ad-hoc division said in a statement.

The CAS had initially announced that the verdict would come before the end of the Paris 2024 Games but delayed it to 13 August on the last day of the Summer Olympics (11 August). The tribunal has now once again extended the time limit for the ad-hoc division to conclude the matter.

“The decision has not come yet, CAS has just informed that they have taken a time extension till 16th August, 6:30 PM (Paris Time). We are also unaware of the reason for this extension. Ad hoc committee of CAS gives its verdict within 24 hours of filing the complaint,” Indian Olympic Association’s lawyer Vidushpat Singhania said.

When did the hearing in the matter conclude?

The arguments in the case was concluded on 10 August after a three-hour hearing in which the Indian wrestler appeared virtually and was also represented by high-profile senior advocates Harish Salve and Singhania.

After the hearing was concluded, the Indian Olympic Association in a statement stated that they remained hopeful of a “positive resolution” from the CAS as the Indian wrestler seeks a silver medal after being denied an opportunity to contest in the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics.

”Indian Olympic Association remained hopeful of a positive resolution of wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s application before the Ad hoc Division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against her failed weigh-in,” the IOA said in a statement.

What is the matter?

Vinesh had filed an appeal with the ad-hoc panel of CAS, a body that looked after disputes on matters pertaining to the Paris Olympics, after she was disqualified from the Games on 7 August due to being overweight by 100 grams during the weigh-in before the wrestling 50kg freestyle final.

Vinesh challenged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and United World Wrestling’s (UWW) decision on 8 August, demanding a joint silver as she had cleared the weigh-in on the first day of competition on 6 August and went on to win her semi-final on the same day which assured her of at least a silver.

On 8 August, Vinesh also announced her retirement from wrestling, saying she does not have the strength to continue.
