Transfer window: From Chelsea's £240 million spending spree to £200 million for Harry Kane
From Chelsea spending a whopping £240 million on Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alex Sandro, Virgil Van Dijk and Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United plotting a £200 million bid for Harry Kane, here are the transfer rumours from this week's sports pages:
That the transfer window throws up a heap of outlandish rumours and baseless assumptions masquerading as facts is known. Season after season, there comes along a story, or hundreds, which is so absurd that it may probably even amuse the footballer and the clubs being written about. Yet, The Daily Star report about Arsenal and Manchester City planning a swap involving Alexis Sanchez and Sergio Aguero stands out for being disjointed from facts, and logic!
Elsewhere, in news that would not make you jump out of your chair in shock, or even shake your head disapprovingly, Pep Guardiola is soon to be re-united with former Barcelona defender Dani Alves at Manchester City, according to The Sun. The Brazilian terminated his contract with Juventus and has reportedly snubbed Chelsea’s £6.1 million a year offer to join City for £4.3 million a year instead. To emphasise their point, The Sun claims that Alves apparently dropped a “hint” about his move by making an appearance at a charity event in a blue suit. Blue Suit.
Chelsea Man City wear blue. Get it? Okay, maybe you can shake your head a little.
Meanwhile, in stories rooted in fact, Chelsea have announced the sale of 21-year-old Burkina-Faso international Bertrand Traore to Lyon for £8.8 million in a deal which reportedly also has a sell-on clause and potential add-ons. Traore made 16 appearances for Chelsea in Jose Mourinho’s last season at the club, scoring four goals.

The Blues, if the Express is to be believed, will spend a whopping £240 million on Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alex Sandro, Virgil Van Dijk and Romelu Lukaku. While Bakayoko will cost the Premier League champions £36 million, Chelsea are reportedly shelling out £60 million each for Juventus’ Sandro and Southampton’s Van Dijk making them the world’s costliest defenders. And to top it off, the Londoners will offer £80 million to Everton to re-sign former striker Lukaku. Pity Chelsea didn’t insert a buy-back clause into Lukaku’s deal when the Belgian joined Everton from Chelsea back in 2014.
The Mirror reports that Antonio Conte’s side are plotting a £35 million move for Sevilla winger Vitolo as competition for Belgian ace Eden Hazard. Vitolo is also sought after by Atletico Madrid but their transfer ban means that Chelsea are in pole position to sign the Spanish winger.
With Bakayoko on the way, Chelsea are hoping to recoup some money by offloading Serbian midfielder Nemanja Matic to Manchester United for £40 million. The Guardian reports that the two-time Premier League champion will soon undergo a medical at United and will earn £155,000 a week when he signs for Jose Mourinho’s side.
La Gazetta dello Sport reports that United will have to cough up €50 million to land long-term target Ivan Perisic. According to The Sun, the 50 million price tag is too much for United who are planning a £40 million bid for Fiorentina’s Federico Bernardeschi instead.
When Antoine Griezmann signed a new deal at Atletico Madrid, it broke the hearts of millions of United fans who were eagerly waiting for the Frenchman and had gone on a video uploading spree welcoming him to Manchester. United have now reportedly shifted their focus to Tottenham striker Harry Kane. Luckily, before the “Welcome to Manchester United Harry Kane” videos became a craze on YouTube, The Independent has reported that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will let Kane go only if United offer a mind-boggling £200 million.
The Guardian reports that RB Leipzig will allow midfield dynamo Naby Keita join Liverpool only if their valuation of £70 million is met. The Guinea international was involved in 15 goals and was an integral part of Leipzig’s remarkable run which saw the Bundesliga first-timers finish second in the league.
Elsewhere, Jurgen Klopp wants to add to his attacking options by going in for £25 million rated Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. According to Mirror, Klopp hopes that Chamberlain will snub advances from rivals Chelsea and Manchester City and sign for the Merseyside club.
If French website Le 10 Sport are to be believed, Borussia Dortmund striker Ousmanne Dembele is on his way to Manchester City after dining with Guardiola. However, City Watch report that Guardiola wasn’t even in Manchester on the night of the said dinner. What a shame! The ridiculously talented Dembele is also a target for Catalan giants Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.
The 25-year-old Gray joins from Bayer Leverkusen, where he had been on loan from Leicester. The contract, till June 2024, includes the option for a fourth year.
"Giroud is expected to be in Italy on Thursday to undergo medicals and sign the contract," wrote Sky Sport on its website.
