Novak Djokovic did not kick Roger Federer into a gaping, bottomless well. And his choice of weapon is a racquet, not a sword or a spear. But his battle-cry is straight out of Sparta.
After his US Open win over everyone's tennis darling, Djokovic climbed up the stands to celebrate with his team. And sitting with his team was the spartan king from the film 300, Gerard Butler.
Novak parted through the crowd of well-wishers and reached Gerard Butler, looked him in the eye and shouted out in true warrior style, "This is Sparta!"
Not just that, it seems 300 and Gerard butler might have helped the Serb, known for his unshakeable mental strength, to toughen up a bit more for the final showdown with the Swiss maestro at Flushing Meadows.
According to a report in the Mirror, Gerard butler and 300 inspired Djokovic's four-set win in the US Open final.
Djokovic revealed that he watched 300 the night before the final to fire himself up and that's what the film did for him.
"We have known each other for several years and we are good friends. He happened to be in the city over the last couple of days, so I invited him to come along. It was very nice of him to be here and show me support," the report quoted Djokovic as saying.
At the post-match press conference, the tennis and the movie star partnered up and cried out the famous lines from the film again. The moment was captured and tweeted out by Novak's wife Jelena.
