Career highlights and milestones - First wicketkeeper to lead India in a Test. - India’s most successful captain in Test cricket with 27 wins in 60 matches. - Became only the eighth Indian captain to start his captaincy stint with a win (v South Africa at Kanpur in April 2008). AP[/caption] - Only the second Indian captain (after Sourav Ganguly) to win his first Test both at home and abroad. He led India for the first time in an overseas Test against New Zealand at Hamilton in March 2009, which was won by India by 10 wickets. - Did not lose any of his first 11 Tests – longest unbeaten streak for any player since making captaincy debut. - Has the highest run-aggregate as Indian captain – 3454 runs in 60 Tests. Interestingly he surpassed the previous record holder Sunil Gavaskar in Melbourne Test after which he announced his retirement! - Holds the Indian record of most wicketkeeping dismissals in a Test with 9 dismissals in Melbourne Test, which was his last Test. - Holds the Indian record of most wicketkeeping dismissals in Tests – 294. - Is the only Indian keeper to score 4000 runs and effect 200 dismissals. - Dhoni Has played more Tests than any other player (60) performing the dual duty of captaining the side as well as donning the wicketkeeping gloves. - He has hit most sixes (51) as captain in Test cricket. - Dhoni’s 224 against Australia is the highest innings by an Indian captain in Test cricket (Sachin Tendulkar held the previous record with 217 against New Zealand in 1999-00). This is also the highest score by a keeper-captain in Test cricket (England’s Alec Stewart held the previous record with 164 against South Africa in 1998). - Under Dhoni India won six consecutive Tests between February and November 2013 – the longest winning streak for any Indian captain. - Led India to their biggest ever win in terms of runs (320) against Australia at Mohali in October 2008 - Holds the record of scoring fifties in both innings of a Test on most occasions as a keeper-captain. There have been eight such instances in Test history. Dhoni appears in four of them! - Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India reached their highest test score of 726-9 (dec) during Sri Lanka’s tour of India in 2009. The series win took them to the number 1 ranking in Test cricket for the first time in history. - Under his captaincy India became the first team in Test history to make successful 4th innings chase in three consecutive Tests. - Became the first Indian captain to win a Test match on New Zealand soil in 33 years when he led India to 10-wicket win at Hamilton in March 2009. Before him, Sunil Gavaskar had won a Test at New Zealand soil way back in January 1976. - Under Dhoni’s captaincy, India made 387-4 in the fourth innings of Chennai Test to beat England- their second highest successful 4th innings chase in Test cricket. - Led India to number one position in ICC rankings in Test cricket for the first time – in December 2009. - Under Dhoni, India won six consecutive Tests between February and November 2013 – the longest winning streak for any Indian captain. - Only Indian captain to win five consecutive series (between 2008 and 2010). - Conceded his first bye in his tenth match after opponents had scored 2469 runs. Dhoni finished his career with 4876 runs at an average of 38.09, having made 6 centuries and 33 half-centuries. His highest Test score was 224. Here is a breakdown of where he scored his runs. ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.51.40 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.51.40-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.51.49 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.51.49-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.51.35 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.51.35-PM.png) Dhoni’s also holds the record for most dismissals by an India wicket-keeper and would be a shoo-in for a spot in any all-time India XI based on his keeping and powerful batting. ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.56.45 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.56.45-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.52.09 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.52.09-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.56.38 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.56.38-PM.png) It is captaincy that most defines Dhoni though. His home record is superb but his away record was disappointing, especially over the last three years. He is India’s most successful captain but has also lost the most Tests of any captain away from home. ![Winningest Indian captains](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Winningest-Indian-captains.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.52.29 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.52.29-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.52.29 PM(1)](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.52.29-PM1.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.56.32 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.56.32-PM.png) ![Two phases of Dhoni away](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Two-phases-of-Dhoni-away.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.55.13 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.55.13-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.53.26 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.53.26-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.53.33 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.53.33-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.54.07 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.54.07-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.54.12 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.54.12-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.54.20 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.54.20-PM.png) ![Screen shot 2014-12-31 at 5.54.29 PM](https://images.firstpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Screen-shot-2014-12-31-at-5.54.29-PM.png)
