Wimbledon’s latest AI experiment has not gone down well with the fans after multiple gaffes on the opening day. Wimbledon’s AI Catch Me Up segment on their official website www.wimbledon.com is being “written by AI with IBM” and it provides AI-generated pre and post-match player cards which include the most important statistics and match highlights.

However, on Day 1 of the 2024 season, the AI Catch Me Up feature came under fire from fans after multiple mistakes were reported in the content developed by the system.

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

For example, Emma Raducanu was called the British number one during her match against Renata Zarazua on Centre Court on Monday. Raducanu is numer three.

Her card also said that she had won 11 matches so far in 2024 while the actual number stood at 14 at that time.

The match between the 35-year-old Zhang Shuai and Russia’s Daria Kasatkina, 27, was described as an “eagerly anticipated encounter between two up-and-coming players”.

The mistakes were later corrected by the organisers after users on X flagged them.

“Raducanu NOT the British number 1 and I am sure 35 year old Zhang (on a 20 match losing streak) Shuai and 27 year old Daria Kasatkina would love to be called up and coming!!” a user wrote on X.

The AI Catch Me Up feature was defended by Wimbledon on Monday.

“The Catch Me Up feature is a first-of-its-kind pilot within sport, delivered in partnership with IBM. This AI innovation will naturally continue to evolve as the system’s capability builds, with the assistance of human checks," an All England Club spokesperson said on Monday.

“This feature complements the traditional breadth of rich editorial content created by our team of writers who provide in-depth coverage of the championships for audiences around the world.”
