Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic in the men’s singles final of the 2024 Wimbledon championships as the Spaniard successfully defended the title that he had won in 2023. Alcaraz prevailed 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) over Djokovic in two hours and 27 minutes to clinch what was his fourth Grand Slam title, having also won the Australian Open (2022) and French Open (2024).

Alcaraz said that with the win, he realised his dream of winning the Wimbledon title once again. “Honestly, it is a dream for me winning this trophy. I did an interview when I was 11 or 12 and I said my dream is to win Wimbledon,” he said at the trophy presentation ceremony.

The 21 year-old also spoke on the importance of winning the Wimbledon. “For me this is the most beautiful tournament, the most beautiful court and the most beautiful trophy,” added the youngster.

Alcaraz termed Djokovic an “unbelievable fighter”. “Djokovic is an unbelievable fighter, I knew he was going to have his chances. It was difficult but I tried to stay calm going into the tie-break and tried to play my best tennis. I was glad at the end I could find the solutions,” added the World No 3.

Djokovic, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles, congratulated Alcaraz but said that it just wasn’t meant to be for the Serb himself.

“It obviously was not the result I wanted but of course in the first couple of sets the level of tennis wasn’t up to par from my side. But credit to Carlos for playing elite tennis, especially from the back of the court, he had it all today. It wasn’t meant to be, I tried to extend the match, but he was an absolute deserved winner today so congratulations for him,” said the 37 year-old.
