Flushing Meadows is the iconic site of the US Open tournament and one of the most famous grounds in world tennis.
The three main courts at the US Open are Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and the Grandstand.
Arthur Ashe Stadium (capacity: 23,771) is named after the only Black man to win singles titles at Wimbledon, the US Open and the Australian Open. He was also a prominent human rights activist.
Louis Armstrong Stadium (capacity: 14,053) was named after jazz great Armstrong who lived a few blocks from the venue until he died in 1971. It was opened during the 2018 event to replace the 1978 stadium of the same name and has a retractable roof like the main court.
The Grandstand (capacity: 8,125) made its debut on August 29, 2016, the opening day of the 2016 US Open.
Who are the defending US Open champions?
Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam title at last year’s US Open at age 19, defeating Aryna Sabalenka 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final. Gauff became the first American teenager to win the country’s major tennis tournament since Serena Williams in 1999.
In men’s singles, Novak Djokovic won his 24th major singles championship — no one in tennis history has more — with a 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory over Daniil Medvedev in the final.
At 36, Djokovic became the oldest male champion in New York in the Open era, which began in 1968.
Which players are involved in the US Open?
Among those in action at the US Open will be four-time winner Novak Djokovic, 2022 champion Carlos Alcaraz, and top-ranked Jannik Sinner, who enters amid controversial circumstances for positive dope tests in March.
Djokovic, Alcaraz and Sinner are the top contenders for the title. Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz are key challengers.
2022 champion Iga Swiatek, last year’s finalist Aryna Sabalenka, and defending champion Coco Gauff are the top three seeds in the women’s singles event at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
The former US Open champions in the women’s field are Sloane Stephens (2017), Naomi Osaka (2018 and 2020), Bianca Andreescu (2019), Emma Raducanu (2021), Swiatek (2022) and Gauff (2023). Osaka and Andreescu received two of the eight wild cards into the main draw.
