Days after Sachin Tendulkar received a hero’s welcome at the Centre Court, another Indian cricketer was spotted at Wimbledon with Test and ODI skipper Rohit Sharma attending the men’s singles semi-finals on Friday.
Rohit, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup recently, was present in the stands at the Centre Court to witness reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz and 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic take on Daniil Medvedev and Lorenzo Musetti in their respective semi-final clashes on Friday.
Croatian football legend Luka Modric was also present at the iconic venue for the men’s singles semi-finals. The iconic Real Madrid midfielder had made the final appearance of his career in the ongoing European Championships, in which Croatia bowed out in the first round after finishing third in Group B.
Rohit is currently on a break after helping India win their first ICC event in more than a decade, with the BCCI granting both him and Virat Kohli a break after the tournament.
Both Rohit and Kohli, along with senior all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, had announced their retirements from Twenty20 Internationals after India’s triumph over South Africa in the final in Barbados on 29 June.
Also attending the Wimbledon men’s singles semi-finals was former India wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who had retired from all forms of the game after this year’s Indian Premier League and has taken up a career in commentary.
Karthik was present at the venue with wife Dipika Pallikal, who is an ace squash player having won gold medals at the World Championships as well as the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Alcaraz, who had won his maiden Wimbledon title last year, reached the final for a second successive year after defeating former US Open champion Medvedev 6-7 (1-7), 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.
As for women’s singles, Jasmine Paolini faces Barbora Krejcikova in the final on Saturday after defeating Donna Vekic and Elena Rybakina respectively.
