Tennis star Novak Djokovic has reportedly taken a big step towards leaving his country, Serbia, amid a smear campaign against the 24-time Grand Slam champion in the European nation, as his children have been enrolled in a new school in another country. The news of Djokovic looking to uproot his family from Serbia and move them to a new country has been in the news for a while.

The thoughts of moving to a new country reportedly came to Djokovic’s mind after he became a target of the Serbian national media for showing his support for protests against President Aleksandar Vucic and his government. The protests against Vucic in Serbia started in November 2024 after the collapse of a roof at a railway station killed 16 people.

Djokovic showed his support to the protester in December 2024 with a heartfelt message on X. “Serbia has enormous potential, and educated youth is its greatest strength. What we all need is understanding and respect. With you, Novak,” he wrote.

Earlier this year, he also condemned police action against protesters, followed by the ‘regime-friendly media’ calling him a ‘false patriot’.

Djokovic’s children start school in new country

According to Tennis24, Djokovic has got his children – Stefan, 10, and Tara, eight – admitted to St. Lawrence College, a private independent school in Athens, Greece. His family now resides in Athens, and Djokovic was recently spotted playing tennis with Stefan at the Kavouri Tennis Club in the city.

The report added that Djokovic is yet to decide on a tennis club for his children, and he is planning to enroll them at either Kavouri or the 91 Athens Riviera.

Another fact that supports the theory that Djokovic is set to leave Serbia is the recent relocation of an ATP 250 tournament from Belgrade to Athens.

The organisation of the ATP 250 tournament is overseen by Djokovic and his brother. It will now be held in Athens under the name of the Hellenic Championship in November. Djokovic has already committed to taking part in the tournament.
