Novak Djokovic breaks down during US Open title celebration in Serbia - WATCH 

After his triumph at the US Open, Novak Djokovic has been going through a whole host of emotions back home in Belgrade. Djokovic received a heartfelt welcome as thousands of fans gathered near Belgrade’s city hall to honour both the Serbian national basketball team as well as their tennis icon.

Djokovic delighted the crowds when he made an unexpected appearance as part of the celebration for the Serbian national basketball team's silver medal win at the FIBA World Cup. Apart from this, Djokovic’s title was also massive for Serbia, and the way it was celebrated in Belgrade was a testament to how much the result meant for the nation as well as the tennis star. These heartwarming scenes showcased the support and love Djokovic enjoys.

Djokovic addressed the jubilant crowd from the balcony and expressed his gratitude before breaking down into tears. Serbian basketball star Nikola Milutinov stepped up as he offered consolation and support to the 24-time Grand Slam champion.

A decade and a half have passed since Novak Djokovic’s first major title at the 2008 Australian Open. Challengers have come and gone, but Djokovic has become one of the most resilient performers at the highest level. He is 36, but his grit and the ability to crank it up in crucial moments is second to none.

Djokovic secured his 24th Grand Slam singles title when he beat Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the final of the US Open. He now has most major titles in the Open Era and went level with Margaret Court in the sport’s all-time Grand Slam winners’ list.

He also achieved the remarkable feat of becoming the oldest man to clinch the US Open singles title in the Open Era.
