At the 2025 WTA 125 L&T Mumbai Open, 15-year-old Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi has taken the tennis world by storm, cementing herself as one of the brightest young stars in Indian tennis. In the largest professional women’s tennis event in India, Rajeshwaran Revathi has been making waves by pushing through the main draw with an impressive run that has already seen her reach the semifinals.

A star in the making?

The journey to the semifinals of the Mumbai Open has been nothing short of extraordinary for Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi. Entering the tournament as a wildcard qualifier, the teenager has defeated some big names in the sport. Wins over former Top 50 player Zarina Diyas (via retirement), Iryna Shymanovich, and Mei Yamaguchi have catapulted her into the spotlight.

Who is Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi?

Born in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi began playing tennis as an after-school activity at the age of eight. It wasn’t until she was 10 that she made the conscious decision to pursue the sport professionally. Fast forward to 2025, and Rajeshwaran Revathi has already made her mark as a Top 60 junior player, and her results in the Mumbai Open have shown that her potential has yet to be fully realized.

Rajeshwaran Revathi’s growth has been nurtured at one of the world’s most prestigious tennis academies, the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca, Spain. She made the decision to train outside India last year to elevate her game to new heights, and after spending a week at the academy, she was offered a yearlong contract.

Her experience watching Rafael Nadal’s intense training sessions, especially as he prepared for his final tournament at the Davis Cup Finals in 2023, left a lasting impression. For Rajeshwaran Revathi, the hunger Nadal displayed despite his immense success is a source of inspiration.

“It’s one of my most favorite memories. Even a man that’s won so much, he’s still got that hunger and that’s really impressive,” Rajeshwaran Revathi said about Nadal.

Rajeshwaran Revathi’s meteoric rise has drawn comparisons to India’s most successful female tennis player, Sania Mirza. Mirza’s name has become synonymous with Indian tennis, and for many young players like Rajeshwaran Revathi, the former World No. 1 doubles player has been an enduring source of inspiration.

“If you say you’re a tennis player in India, it’s her name that always pops up in response. It’s her I’ve always looked up to as an Indian athlete,” she said.

Much like Mirza, Rajeshwaran Revathi is setting ambitious goals for her future. Her ultimate aim is to win Grand Slam titles and become the World No. 1, just as Mirza did in doubles.

“Win Slams and end up as World No. 1,” Rajeshwaran Revathi confidently stated. “That’s where it all ends.”
