World No. 1 Jannik Sinner is making the most of his three-month suspension from tennis, embracing other passions while staying in shape for his return. The Italian agreed to the ban as part of a resolution with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), sidelining him from the game until 4 May and forcing him to miss four Masters 1000 tournaments, Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid.
Sinner keeps himself busy despite the ban
Despite the setback, Sinner has kept busy with activities beyond tennis. The 23-year-old has returned to his childhood love for skiing, hitting the slopes in Sexten, an activity he normally avoids due to injury risk during competition season. He has also taken up golf, reportedly practicing at the Golf and Country Club in Sudtirol.
Apart from sports, the Italian star made an appearance at Milan Fashion Week last month. Meanwhile, his team has reportedly put together a training plan to ensure he remains in peak physical condition ahead of his return in May.
Sinner’s suspension comes after nearly a year of controversy, stemming from two positive tests for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024. His lawyers successfully negotiated with WADA for a reduced punishment as the agency was reportedly seeking at least a one-year ban.
Jannik Sinner is expected to lose crucial ATP ranking points before his return from suspension on 4 May 2025. This includes 500 points from the Rotterdam Open, which he did not defend, and a significant points from the Miami Open. Additionally, he will forfeit points from the Monte Carlo Masters and Madrid Open. Despite these losses, Sinner remains comfortably ahead in the ATP rankings with 11,330 points.
Alexander Zverev, currently ranked No. 2, has a chance to challenge Sinner’s top spot but would need at least 3,195 points during this period to overtake him. Carlos Alcaraz faces an even tougher climb, requiring over 3,820 points to claim the No. 1 ranking. Sinner will be allowed to resume training from 13 April. His expected comeback tournament is the Italian Open, and he will also be eligible to compete at Roland Garros when the French Open begins on 25 May.
