Jannik Sinner ended Novak Djokovic’s bid for a record 25th Grand Slam singles with a semi-finals victory over the tennis legend on Friday at the Australia Open. The Italian youngster defeated Djokovic 6-1, 6-2, 6-7(6), 6-3 in the semi-finals of the Australian Open. The Serbian was targeting to clinch his 25th Grand Slam which would have made him the tennis player with most major singles titles. Djokovic had been sharing the record with Australian Margaret Court ever since winning his 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open last September. This is the first time Sinner will be playing a Grand Slam final and will be facing one of Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev who will take on each other in the second semi-final.

Sinner’s shocking semi-final win is a statistical aberration given Djokovic’s domination at the Australian open. Apart from winning the the first Grand Slam of the year 10 times since 2008, the Serbian tennis ace had been unbeatable when he reached the semi-final stage at Australian Open. He held a 20-0 win record across semi-final and final matches at the Australian Open. Coming to the match. Sinner made a blistering start, winning the first two sets 6-1, 6-2 in under 1 1/4 hours, but Djokovic improved his game in the third set by cutting down his unforced errors and picking up his service percentage. The Serbian forced a tiebreaker in the third set and at 5-6 saved a match point before winning three straight points to force a fourth set. There was early trouble for Djokovic in the fourth set as he had to fight out three break points to hold serve from 15-40 in the second game. However, Sinner struck a decisive blow in the fourth game when he won five straight points from 40-0 down to take a 3-1 lead. At this point, the Australian Open crowd got very loud in support of Djokovic but Sinner sealed the set 6-3 to script history. “It was a very very tough match. I started off really well, he missed for two sets. I felt like he was not feeling that great on court so I just tried to keep pushing. Then in the third set I had matchpoint but I missed the forehand but this is tennis. I just tried to be ready for the next set which I started off really well. and obviously the atmosphere was so so great to play here,” Sinner said after his historic win.
