Former US Open winner Daniil Medvedev has divulged that he has discussed the idea of boycotting matches with his team. The former world no.1 has exhibited his ire about the scheduling of matches and complained that it is not easy to turn up for an early morning match after playing one at night.
Medvedev, 29, pictured a future where he would happily give up on playing the 11 am matches and wouldn’t mind handing walk overs to his opponents in return for his well being.
“I was talking to my team today" Medvedev told The Guardian,. “I was like: ‘When I’m 35, I might just boycott the 11 am matches.’ I’ll be like: ‘I’m not coming. Walkover.’ Like: ‘Yeah, I didn’t wake up. Sorry, guys.’
“In my opinion, 11 is so early. You have to wake up at 6.30 in the morning, where if you play at night, you wake up at 9 am. So it changes the perspective of the match. It’s crazy mentally.”
Match timings always remain a bone of contention in tennis, as some players often complain about the impact that delays have on matches. A lot of players have voiced their dissatisfaction about being pushed back, especially at the last minute.
Daniil Medvedev to play the Mixed Doubles Championship
Daniil Medvedev will be in action at the US Open 2025, which is scheduled to start on August 24, 2025. Moreover, he will be a part of the Mixed Doubles Championship, a new initiative launched by USTA to promote the mixed doubles category.
In the Mixed Doubles Championship, Medvedev will pair with Mirra Andreeva, and they will take on Novak Djokovic and Olga Danilovic in the round of 16 match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Tuesday, August 19.
Medvedev has had a terrible season till now, as far as Grand Slams are concerned. The Russian could not move past the second round at the Australian Open and suffered a first-round defeat in both the French Open and Wimbledon. These are worrying results for someone who has experienced the pinnacle position of the sport. However, it should be noted that the decline in form would be due to the fact that he has sustained some unfortunate injuries this year.
