Footballing superstar Cristiano Ronaldo shared a heartwarming message for Rafael Nadal after the tennis legend announced on Thursday that he will retire from tennis at the end of 2024. The 22 Grand Slams winner, Nadal, said he will bid goodbye to professional tennis after the Davis Cup final in November.
He announced through a video on Instagram and in reply to it, Ronaldo shared a sweet message for his “friend”.
“Rafa, what an incredible career you have had! Your dedication, passion, and incredible talent have inspired millions around the world. It has been an honour to witness your journey and be able to call you a friend. Congratulations on an amazing career! Enjoy your retirement!” Ronaldo wrote.
One of Nadal’s biggest adversaries on the pitch and friend off it, 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer wrote in the replies that he “hoped” the Spaniard never retired.
“What a career, Rafa! I always hoped this day would never come. Thank you for the unforgettable memories and all your incredible achievements in the game we love. It’s been an absolute honour,” Federer wrote
In a separate post, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic thanked Nadal for helping him become a better player by forcing him to push the limits.
“Rafa, one post is not enough to express the respect I have for you and what you have done for our sport. You have inspired millions of children to start playing tennis and I think that’s probably greatest achievement anyone can wish for,” Djokovic wrote.
“Your tenacity, dedication, fighting spirit is going to be taught for decades. Your legacy will live forever. Only you know what you had to endure to become icon of tennis and sport in general.
“Thank you for pushing me to the very limit so many times in our rivalry that has impacted me the most as a player…”
