Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has hinted that he might have played his last Australian Open singles match in Melbourne, following his straight-sets loss to Britain’s Jacob Fearnley in the first round on Monday. Nick went down with a scoreline of 6-7 (3-7), 3-6, 6-7 (2-7) on Monday. Ever since withdrawing from the Japan Open in 2022, Nick Kyrgios’ career has been marred with knee and wrist injuries.

He has only played two matches on the ATP Tour since, one during the 2023 Stuttgart Open and another first round loss during the Brisbane International earlier this season. “I went out there, I would say 65% of my capacity,” he told reporters after his first-round loss in Melbourne.

“For [the fans] to really see me fighting and still giving me that energy, it meant a lot, because I feel like I’ve given my life to tennis and I’ve tried to give them a show every time I go out there. Realistically, I can’t see myself playing a singles match here again,” added the 29-year-old.

‘My journey is not over’: Kyrgios

Kyrgios, however, reiterated that his tennis journey is not over yet. “My journey is not over, but I’ve had an amazing journey. My career has been amazing,” he said. “I continue to try and have fun, just be real, and enjoy the ride. But I think it would be selfish for me to say that I want more. I’ve had a lot of success. More than most athletes would have,’ he stated. Kyrgios’ Australian Open campaign is not done just yet despite the defeat.

He will compete in men’s doubles as he team up with fellow Aussie Thanasi Kokkinakis. The duo will take on fellow countrymen Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth in the men’s doubles first round on Wednesday.
