Frances Tiafoe endured a difficult time during his five-set win over Arthur Rinderknech in the first round of the 2025 Australian Open on Monday, after the American vomited midway through the contest. Tiafoe was leading 6-5 in the fourth set of the match against the Frenchman when he threw up at the edge of the court.
Tiafoe would however hold himself together and beat Arthur with a score of 7-6 (7/2), 6-3, 4-6, 6-7 (4/7), 6-3 in four hours and eight minutes.

‘I thought I could be out of here in five minutes’: Tiafoe
“Honestly, when I threw up, I felt like, returning 5-6, I could be out of here in two minutes, out of here in five minutes," Tiafoe said. “I think if it was, you know, any other event, I probably would have let it go. But here, you got to lay it all on the line," he added.
Tiafoe said that the reason or vomiting in between the game had nothing to do with food or the hot temperatures in Melbourne, but it was due to being over-hydrated. “I threw up all electrolytes and water. Wasn’t like food in the tank was the issue. Neither was the heat, really," the 26-year-old continued.
“Look, man, things happen. It’s been funny all the things I’ve been getting tagged with since then," added Tiafoe. Taifoe said that it has been a horrible recovery for him after the match. “Horrible. It’s been terrible," he said. Tiafoe will next face Fabian Marozsán of Hungary in the second round of the Australian Open on Wednesday.
‘Whatever it takes’: Tiafoe
Later, Tiafoe told ESPN that he carried on because this was a Grand Slam tournament and that there was no looking back. “Loose game there, 5-3. Brought it back to deuce and wasn’t able to convert. Obviously tired but feeling fine. Then get the line and puke. I have some ab cramps during that, then I’m cramping all over the place,” he said. “He plays a pretty good breaker. Any other tournament, I would have pulled out but it’s a Slam. I’m in the second part of my career and these are the tournaments I care about the most. Whatever it takes," he added.
