FT: Shakhtar Donetsk 2-1 AS Roma

A fine comeback from the Ukranian side to take the lead to the Stadio Olimpico in three week's time. But with that away goal for AS Roma, this tie is finely poised

  • 03:08 (IST)

  • 03:07 (IST)

    FT: Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

A job well done for Manchester United in the end who defended well to keep Sevilla at bay. However, there is no away goal for Jose Mourinho's men in Seville. United have slight advantage at Old Trafford but Sevilla are very much in the game especially having not conceded that away goal. It's nicely set up  for the second leg

  • 03:04 (IST)

2 minutes of stoppage time added on at the end of the 90 minutes

  • 03:02 (IST)

    85' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

End to end stuff suddenly. United with some last ditch defending to deny Sevilla the opener before they go down the other end through Martial. His cross is overhit but Rashford rescues it to carve out an opening after combining with Pogba only to fire wide

  • 02:55 (IST)

    80' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

Mourinho with two positive changes thinking he can nick a winner here right at the death. Rashford and Martial will offer plenty of pace down the flanks and it may something that is required to make the breakthrough tonight

Fred fires home a sublime free-kick to give the Ukrainians the lead in the tie for the first time

  • 02:45 (IST)

    70' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

Sevilla comes close with a sumptuous cross across the face of De Gea's goal but no takers from the home side at the end of it. United now playing more on the counter as Sevilla press for a winner. Dangerous game

  • 02:41 (IST)

    65' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

The defences have been on top in this one. Both teams taking turns in attack but chances have been far and few. Sevilla have edged matters but isn't reflecting on the scoreline

  • 02:37 (IST)

  • 02:35 (IST)

    60' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

Good spell of possession from Manchester United, but the Red Devils are lacking purpose in their play. Sevilla are able to clear their penalty area as we await the first goal of the evening

  • 02:31 (IST)

    55' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

No major chances as Sevilla continue to have more of the ball. United happy to sit back and thwart the home side. Not a lot of goal-mouth action in the second half so far

  • 02:28 (IST)

GOAL! Shakhtar Donetsk 1-1 AS Roma. Facundo Ferreyra scores!

  • 02:26 (IST)

    50' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

Once again Sevilla staring the half on the front foot but United being very solid at the back. Mourinho will be disappointed with his side's attacking endeavours though as they have offered very little going forward

    45' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

GOAL! Shakhtar Donetsk 0-1 AS Roma. Cengic Under scores!

Under finishes from close range after Edin Dzeko finds his run with a neat pass. Big away goal for Roma

  • 01:56 (IST)

Yellow Card for Alexis Sanchez from bring down a marauding Jesus Navas

  • 01:55 (IST)

    40' Shakhtar 0-0 Roma

  • 01:53 (IST)

    35' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

Sevilla on the attack now but United defending resolutely. Players are taking a tumble for fun as the game has too many stoppages for anyone's liking. 10 minutes to go in the first half and this has been a very tight affair. It appears that both teams are keen to keep a clean sheet

  • 01:47 (IST)

    30' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

Sevilla holding firm as United have their best spellof the game. Sanchez is starting to get on the ball more often and trying to find the killer pass from a deeper area. Sevilla's attempts to counter-attack have been smothered by United. The game needs a moment of magic to spark it to life

  • 01:43 (IST)

    25' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

United with a good spell of possession leading to a chance for Romelu Lukaku who fired his volley over. The away side have grown into game after a slow start.

  • 01:41 (IST)

  • 01:39 (IST)

Yellow card for Steven N'Zonzi for a high boot on Alexis Sanchez

  • 01:37 (IST)

    20' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

Paul Pogba is on the pitch after being dropped by Mourinho as he replaces the injured Herrera. There is no change in shape as the Frenchman slots in the position vacated by Herrera. It will be interesting to see how the change affects the game. He will give United more attacking impetus, but Matic may have to do all the dirty work now.

  • 01:34 (IST)

  • 01:32 (IST)

Paul Pogba is set to come on for Manchester United

  • 01:31 (IST)

Ander Herrera has gone down holding his hamstring. It doesn't look good for the Spaniard who looks set to come off

  • 01:29 (IST)

    15' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

United have got into their compact shape and are doing well to close the gaps for Sevilla to play in. After a nervy start, Jose Mourinho's men are a bit more settled. However, Sevilla are alert to any counter-attacks from the away side. Alexis Sanchez who tries to get at the end of one is closed down quickly. A cagey affair so far

  • 01:24 (IST)

    10' Sevilla 0-0 Manchester United

The tone of the game is set. United are sitting back waiting for an error from the home side, while Sevilla are keen to get on the front foot and test the struggling Manchester United backline. No major chances to report so far. As I type United have a corner

Preview: Sevilla coach Vincenzo Montella has suggested the only way his side can stop Manchester United forward Alexis Sanchez in Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg will be to tie the Chilean up with a rope.

Sanchez has only scored once in five games since moving from Arsenal last month but has added a layer of attacking quality to Jose Mourinho’s side, which he showed with a pin-point pass for Romelu Lukaku’s second goal in Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup fifth round.

“How do we stop Sanchez? I don’t know, we’ll have to block him in some way, maybe tie him up with a rope,” the 43-year-old Montella told a news conference on Tuesday.

“He’s a fantastic player, I saw him play in Italy. He has improved so much as his career has progressed, he’s very fast, he leads counter-attacks, he’s very strong.”

Mourinho said later on Tuesday that Sanchez had chosen to join United in the middle of the season so he could compete in the Champions League knockout stages, which he was unable to do at Arsenal who are in the Europa League this term.

“Alexis could have waited for the summer window but one of the reasons he came now was the attraction of playing in this stage of the Champions League,” said the Portuguese coach.

“We’re with the best of the best. This is why Alexis wanted to come in January, to play in this competition. So we have to be strong in this tie because if we aren’t he’ll only play two games.”

Surprise Choice

Montella was a surprise choice to take over at Sevilla when Eduardo Berizzo was sacked in December, but if he outmanoeuvres Mourinho over two legs he will be the first coach to lead the Liga side to the quarter-finals of Europe’s top competition.

Sevilla have failed to reach the last eight in three attempts, falling to Fenerbahce on penalties in 2008, CSKA Moscow in 2010 and Leicester City last season.

Montella’s European experience includes his Fiorentina side being knocked out in the Europa League semi-finals by Sevilla in 2015, while his only Champions League journey was ended in the last 16 by Shakhtar Donetsk in 2011 while in charge of AS Roma.

He spoke in exalted terms of the vastly more experienced 55-year-old Mourinho, who has overseen 139 games in the Champions League and lifted the trophy twice.

“I‘m very excited to be facing Mourinho, he was a pioneer in football tactics and I studied him a lot when I was starting out as a coach,” Montella added.

“He has a lot more games than me in the Champions League. Experience is very important, but so is enthusiasm and we will try and play with a lot of it tomorrow.”
