Rather than the discussion being about who will win the India vs Australia World T20 tie on Friday, the limelight is only on one question: will Virender Sehwag be chosen in India’s XI? In a column written for The Hindu, former India coach Greg Chappell admits that the 33-year-old is the most gifted ball striker he has seen, but working with him was very frustrating: To say that Viru was one of the great frustrations of my time with the team is an understatement. Sadly, he continues to disappoint and is in danger of squandering his God-given talent. The person who is least likely to be fazed by all of this is Virender himself. MS Dhoni has already admitted that deciding the team against Australia will be one of the toughest decisions he will have to make. Whether he plays or not, Chappell also says that Sehwag is very unlikely to ever change his ways: He had never had to work hard at developing such a skill, Viru did not know how to dedicate himself to disciplined training… it is unlikely that Sehwag will ever change. It is probably too late now. Chappell’s admissions come a day before India take on Australia in a crucial group match. For India to go through, they need to pick their best XI that will trouble their opponents the most. The Aussie, who had a controversial tenure in India, also wrote that Sehwag harbours a desire to captain the side: Strangely, for someone who only wants to play the game on his terms, he harbours a desire to captain his country. I have no doubt that he could do it for he understands the game well, but what he fails to grasp is that with the honour comes responsibility. Read the full column in The Hindu here.
