Fears over Michael Schumacher’s health are growing in Germany, with weekly news magazine Focus reporting that ‘Schumacher could be in a coma forever’ after speaking with experts on his condition. Even the popular Bild reported that his condition was so grave now that all plans to wake him up were put on the back-burner. Since meeting with an accident while skiing in the French Alps on 29 December, Schumacher has been kept in induced coma for 18 days and has already undergone a couple of surgeries. Cologne neurological expert Professor Gereon Fink has been mentioned in this Daily Mail report as saying that Schumacher’s health condition is apparently worse than hoped for. He also said: ‘Depending on where bleeding has taken place can lead to unilateral paralysis, speech disorders or personality changes.’ A coma can actually be maintained for life — and Schumacher’s condition may be so bad that waking him up could prove lethal — but it will eventually have an adverse effect on his liver. It will also lead to muscle breakdown and rises in intracranial pressure.
