Sania-Zheng make winning start at US Open

Sania Mirza and her Chinese partner Zheng Jie cruised into the second round of the women’s doubles event at the US Open tennis tournament Thursday.

Sania and Zheng dispatched German Annika Beck and Puerto Rican Monica Puig in straight sets, winning 6-2, 6-2 on court 16 of the USTA National Tennis Center here.

Sania and Zheng come to Flushing Meadows high on confidence after winning the New Haven title last week.

Other Indians competing in the doubles event - Leander Paes, Mahesh Bhupathi and Divij Sharan - open their campaign with different partners later Thursday.
