With that, it’s time to sign off. A great night for India, and feels like a watershed moment in the career of young Lallianzuala Chhangte. Remember the name, folks. Join us again for the semifinals as India will take take on Maldives or Afghanistan.

Adios till then!

Oh wow, I did not see that coming.

December 27, 2015, 20:29:26 (IST)

Amen to that. There were two 17-year-olds in the Nepal starting lineup and the goalscorer Bimal Nagar was one of them.

It’s full time at Trivandrum International Stadium. India complete a turnaround to win 4-1 thanks to goals from Rowlin Borges, Sunil Chhetri and a brace from 18-year-old Lallianzuala Chhangte. Big night for the youngster. India head to semifinals as group toppers and it’s a early exit for Nepal.

GOAL! And it’s that man Chhangte again. A super chip cross from Rowlin from left, a very clever run through the channels by the youngster & a header that loops over the stranded goalkeeper. What a night for the youngster!! 4-1 now.

Absolutely can’t get over that screamer from Zuala. Stunning. Simply stunning. Nepal have been well and truly beaten here by the hosts.

GOAL! WHAT A MOMENT! 18-yr-old Zuala Chhangte with a screamer. Becomes youngest Indian scorer of all time. Stepover, cuts in and fires a rasping hit into the top corner with his left foot. What a night for the kid!!
December 27, 2015, 20:10:32 (IST)
Sunil Chhetri is sitting on the sidelines with ice wrapped around the knees. India will hope its nothing serious, will be a huge, huge blow to miss out on the talisman for the semifinals

Big save, Subrata Paul! Substitute Anil Gurung is played through on goal but the man nicknamed Spiderman comes flying out and slides to save the shot. It lobs and trickles just wide off the post.

And India almost make it 3-1. Could have been a huge moment for the young Zuala! Dribbles free in the box and gets a shot away which beats the goalkeeper but a sliding goal-line clearance. Weak shot in the end.

Meanwhile, Sunil Chhetri is off for Jeje Lalpekhlua.

December 27, 2015, 20:01:39 (IST)
GOAL! Chhetri fires India ahead to complete turnaround. A lucky break in the box again, but cool finish. Bit of an aimless cross from the left is not cleared by the Nepal center back. It falls to Chhetri, who toe pokes it under pressure. What a composed finish.
December 27, 2015, 19:56:56 (IST)

Some very good build up play by India there. Sunil Chhetri at the heart of it, building from the deep with Zuala and Lyngdoh, who plays a clever through ball to Jairu down the left channel but he cannot get the cross away. (Crossing, it must be said, has been quite awful) Nepal have made their final substitution. Yet another Gurung on the pitch now. Three by my count.

After 66 mins India 1-1 Nepal

December 27, 2015, 19:51:48 (IST)
After goodness knows how many crosses in the last match against Sri Lanka, India have their first of the night at the hour mark. Short corner comes to nothing.
December 27, 2015, 19:50:12 (IST)

Great shot, good save! Nepal almost ahead after a bit of a lull in the game now. A rasping drive from outside the box by Heman Gurung, but Paul saves well, diving full length. Came at a good height.

Nepal make their second substitution, need a sparkle from somewhere. After 60 mins, India 1-1 Nepal

Good save, Subrata! A low pass behind the defence from the right byline finds Nepal striker through on goal. With the angle getting tight, he gets a shot away aimed at the far post, but Subrata gets his hands to it. Rebound is cleared.
December 27, 2015, 19:40:04 (IST)
Chhangte on the charge straight away. Some excellent dribbling down the right, with nice stepovers. And holds the ball before linking with Chhetri. Cross from the resulting move is too easy for the Nepal keeper.
December 27, 2015, 19:36:41 (IST)
Substitution for India: The impressiv 18 year old Lallianzuala Chhangte comes on for Sanju Pradhan. His second senior appearance and he gets 45 minutes tonight.
December 27, 2015, 19:35:14 (IST)
Second half underway. Chhetri kicks things off.

It’s half-time! An entertaining first half comes to an end with the scores level at 1-1. Nepal stunned the hosts early on with a goal in the third minute after a defensive error by Pritam but India have come back very well to equalise through Rowlin Borges. As it stands, India top the group and Nepal are heading home early.

Lyngdoh & Chhetri are operating at a level so much higher than their teammates. Such gulf in class. Chhetri takes a very clever free kick, playing in Jairu with a short pass when everyone was waiting for a shot / cross. Jairu couldn’t apply the finish from the left.

Best crowd of the tournament so far…

December 27, 2015, 19:15:51 (IST)
A lengthy break in play here as Nepal midfielder gets some treatment for cramps it seems like. Nepal, worth noting, played their first match on Wednesday while India played on Friday.

End to end stuff in Trivandrum now, but not many clear cut chances for either side. Nepal defending with a high line but a through ball from Lyngdoh finds Narzary just offside. Indian defence looks more settled now. Unlike the first match, there is very little action on India’s right flank as right back Khongjee is struggling to get into the offence.

GOAL! Rowlin Borges fires into the top of the net with a bullet strike after a scrap in the back. A free kick from the left, almost at the half way line, results in a scrap in the Nepal box. (Hint of a handball by Pritam too, not given) It falls kindly to Rowlin who absolutely leathers into the goal, from few yards out. That’s his first ever for India. Game on!
December 27, 2015, 18:57:38 (IST)
Oh, chance India again! A super whipped cross from Sanju Pradhan on the right flank is met by Narzary but he heads it away from the goal. Bikash Jairu tries to keep the ball in play but it goes for a goal kick.

Match preview: Thiruvananthapuram: India football coach Stephen Constantine believes the SAFF Championship game against Nepal here on Sunday will be a tricky one. Nepal lost their opener against Sri Lanka 0-1 while India, in their first game, beat Sri Lanka 2-0. [caption id=“attachment_2425980” align=“alignleft” width=“380”] File picture of India football players. Getty File picture of India football players. Getty[/caption] “Nepal were unlucky to lose their first match. They are a good side and tomorrow will be a tricky match. We are an improving team and hopefully we will get the result we desire,” Constantine said on Saturday. The coach confirmed that striker Robin Singh’s leg injury wasn’t a serious one and that he would feature in the game. “Robin’s X-ray reveals it isn’t anything serious. He will be back.” Post-breakfast on Saturday, the players hit the beach for recovery sessions. “When you do recovery sessions in water, it’s quite beneficial for the players. They don’t feel the pressure, the banging on the joints as the water takes away all the pressure,” the English tactician said. “It also gets them out of the hotel apart from their daily schedule which at times can be boring. When you train with scenery behind you it’s quite a bit of fun. So it’s as much mental as physical.” Defender Arnab Mondal said that the squad is fearless and the players are up to the challenges ahead. “Life is synonymous with challenges. Waters will be deep but we are there to ride and swim out of the deep. We are Constantine’s squad. We are fearless,” Mondal said. Nepal played some brilliant football in their last game but failed to score. The contest therefore promises to be full of pace and thrill. IANS
