Rio Olympics 2016 Highlights Day 7: Sania-Rohan reach SF; Vikas Krishan into QF
Rio de Janeiro: After drawing a blank over the first six days vis-à-vis opening the coveted medal chest, India would be keenly watching action on day seven at the Rio Olympics today with Blue Riband athletics events making its bow. It was a largely disappointing sixth day yesterday in which shuttlers Saina Nehwal, P V Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth shone even as the men’s hockey team lost in the league and yet made it to the quarter finals after 36 years.

Second set begins with two straight holds for Murray and Bopanna. 1-1.
Murray looked tired towards the end of the first set and threw in some laboured serves. Two consecuitve three-setters in the singles finally taking a toll, maybe?
Mixed Doubles Tennis: Sania Mirza/Rohan Bopanna win the first set 6-4 over Great Britain’s Andy Murray and Heather Watson.
Excellennt serving by Bopanna to give the Brits no look at a break. Big, booming winners.
Mirza and Murray exchange holds and now it’s Bopanna’s time to serve for the first set!
He starts off with a service winner!
Sania Mirza’s forehand is on fire!
She hits a great cross-court FH to help India break Watson’s serve. Mirza/Bopanna lead 4-3.
Now the difficult part for Sania – hold serve.
Sania Mirza comes up with a good second serve to hold. Murray follows it up with a comfortable hold himself. 3-2.
Mixed Doubles Tennis:
Two consecutive breaks and we are back on serve at 1-2!
Bopanna started serving with a double fault and eventually dropped his service game. He will need to do better if India are to win this. But while returning, they went with the right tactic to attack Watson’s serve. Sania Mirza serving for India now.
Andy Murray starts the match, serving first. And it goes to deuce in teh very first game. Watson with some susceptible returning at the net.
But Murray’s serve comes to the rescue as they hold for 1-0.
Mixed Doubles Tennis:
Tough match for Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna in the mixed doubles quarter-finals! They are playing Great Britain’s Andy Murray and Heather Watson.

Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Great match. Maybe not the result India wanted but they anyhow have a QF spot sealed. For Canada, David Carter and Scott Tupper put in an impressive performance.
FT – It ends India 2-2 Canada . A lively match and strong performance put in by Canada.
Hockey Updates: India without a goalkeeper. They have thrown an extra player in. Huge pressure from India. But Carter saves.
Hockey Updates: India have removed Sreejesh and Raghunath wears the yellow shirt. They want a winner.
Hockey Updates: Less than 5 mins to go. Canada dangerous on the PC. India needs to be careful. India killing the pace. Building up.
Hockey Updates: GOAL!! Tupper gets his 2nd of the game as he converts from penalty corner.
Hockey Updates: Canada wants a PC. They have gone for a referral. Umpire had pointed for a long corner. Canada get the PC. Sreejesh saves the low flick.
Hockey updates: End of Q3: Another brilliant half. India have taken a 2-1 lead against Canada thanks to Ramandeep.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Valmiki sends a cross into the circle but Nikkin can’t trap. India would want a 3rd here to close the game. But they are still keeping gaps at the back. Canada trying to exploit it. India can’t be complacent.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: It’s a ripper from Raghunath, way back from the midfield…ball entering the Canadian defence as Ramandeep deflects it past Carter for 2-1.
He doesn't score as much as we would like, but when he does, Ramandeep scores stylish, memorable goals #hockey
— Mihir Vasavda (@mihirsv) August 12, 2016
Hockey Updates: GOAL!! Brilliant from #IND , Ramandeep makes it 2-1. A defence splitting pass from Raghunath. Ramandeep with his 22nd international goal.
Hockey Updates: Canada have scored, But the umpire rules it out. Canada wants a referral. The video umpire says NO GOAL.
Hockey Updates: GOAL!!! India’s lead didn’t last last long. Captain Scott Tupper scores from penalty corner. It’s 1-1 . Sreejesh dives, stops partially but it rolls under him.
Hockey Updates: GOAL!! India finally break the deadlock. Akashdeep with a thumping reverse stick finish. PC flick by Harmanpreet…Carter saves…Akashdeep picks up the rebound and in a flash hits it past Carter.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: It’s still goalless. India have had five chances but haven’t been able to close it out. Canada have had three chances. Matthew Guest had a one-to-one with Sreejesh but somehow managed to deflect it out.
End of Q2: What a lively quarter. Both teams fail to convert their chances. It’s India 0-0 Canada.
Hockey updates: Rupinder Pal Singh’s flick hits Scott Tupper on the face mask. Brave defending from Canada. India fail to use the PC. Canada then go on a thunderous counterattack, Sizzling cross from Panesar and Bissett’s deflection goes fizzing past the Indian goal post.
Hockey updates: CLOSE! It’s an open goal yet again. Sardar gives a wonderful pass but Nikkin who has the space and time but his shot whizzes inches wide.
Hockey updates: Sunil has gone crashing into the Ad boards. He seems to be in pain. Medical staff already there. India will be hoping he is okay.
Play stopped at the moment. Now Sunil is being carried off. Hope the injury is not too bad.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: Nikkin had the speed to beat three Canadians but cannot find the space to carve out a pass. He is then boxed out and deprived off the ball. India needs the lead to settle down their nerves.
Rowing Update! Dattu Bhokanal finishes second in the Semifinal C/D 2. He has qualified for Final C
Hockey updates: Teixeira almost gets it but Canada cannot put it past the Indian defence. Great chance again for Canada but they can’t force the opening goal.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India pressing hard but the combinations are still rough. They need to move in tandem like the Manpreet move with Nikkin and Ramandeep.
Hockey updates: Manpreet Singh almost scores, it’s an open goal but the Canadian goalkeeper David Carter brings off a brilliant save. Both teams have opened up the play…it’s a wide open midfield. And India should utilise it with their pace.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: It’s still goalless but Canada had the best chance. And they blew it. If Canada had scored, for the first time they would taken the lead in a match at the Rio Olympics. India was caught on the back foot there..loose play by India.
Hockey Updates: Desperate defending from Canada. They thwart an attack and a penalty corner and they go bursting forward in a counter-attack but they miss a glorious chance. Best phase of the match.
Hockey Updates: Tremendous pressure from India, they have kind of parked themselves in the Canadian circle. But can they make it count? Can India get a goal in the 1st quarter? They almost get it but Sunil fails to trap in front of the Canadian goal.
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India are entering the Canadian circle at will but just can’t hold the ball to make scoring chances. Ramandeep, Sardar, Akashdeep, all have had sharp chances but they need to keep their composure.
Hockey updates: India start aggressively…in the Canadian half. Sardar right upfront, playing almost like a striker. India taking their time with free hits. India pressing hard…Canada trying to build up.
Hockey updates: Stat: India have played Canada thrice in the Olympic Games and won all the three encounters. It’s a 100 per cent record for India.
Men’s 25m rapid pistol Update! Gurpreet Singh drops to fourth place after scoring 90 in series 4. Finishes Stage One with a score of 289
Hockey Updates: Canada has lost all their previous matches in the group while India has lost two and won two. A win today against Canada should give India three points and nine in total.
Men’s 25m rapid fire pistol Update! Gurpreet Singh scores 99 in Series 6. He is currently second in the rankings. Good going from the Indian
Hockey updates: Firstpost expert Sundeep Misra: India ready to take on Canada. India are already in the quarterfinals. A win against Canada should cement a 3rd place in the group, which would mean India face the 2nd team in the other group. But overall, looking at the QF, India needs to put in a powerful performance which would boost morale ahead of the knock-outs. Canada has had a topsy turvy tournament but they would also like to close out the tournament on a high. That is exactly where India needs to be careful of the Canadians.

Hockey Updates: The Indian men’s hockey team qualified for knock-outs for the first time since Moscow Games in 1980, on Friday. Even though they lost their match 2-1 against Netherlands earlier in the day, it was a 4-4 draw between Germany and Argentina that propelled them into the quarter-final.
