RCA appoints Lalit Modi's lawyer Abdi to present its case to BCCI

Jaipur: Rajasthan Cricket Association today appointed Mehmood Abdi to present its case before the BCCI Working Committee which is likely to discuss in its meeting in Chennai tomorrow the fallout of former IPL commissioner Lalit Modi’s possible return as president of the RCA. Modi, who has been banned for life by the BCCI, was allowed to fight for the post of RCA president in the December 19 elections held under the supervision of a Supreme Court-appointed observer. The results of the polls are expected to be known on January 6 when the matter relating to the RCA comes up for hearing before the Supreme Court. Reuters[/caption] The BCCI, meanwhile, had issued a warning to RCA stating that it would lose benefits from the Board if the banned former IPL commissioner was allowed to remain an office bearer in any of its units. Fearing a punitive action from the BCCI, the RCA executive committee met here today and appointed Modi loyalist and president of Ganganagar District Association, Mehmood Abdi, to represent its case to the Board. “The RCA is not a member of the BCCI Working Committee and neither it has been invited to attend the meeting but we feel that RCA matter would discussed and we should put across our position,” said Abdi. “I feel the BCCI would follow the democratic norms and allow us state our position. If I am not allowed in the meeting I would try and meet members individually and explain the legal position of RCA relating to Lalit Modi’s candidature in RCA elections,” he said. “RCA is governed by Rajasthan Sports Act and Modi’s candidature was cleared by Supreme Court appointed observer. There are many complicated legal issues involved that many members of BCCI Working Committee may not be aware of them. The matter which would be discussed would be related to Modi and also future of Rajasthan cricket and that is why the executive of RCA appointed me to represent RCA in BCCI meetings and related affairs,” said Abdi who also contested for the post of Deputy President in the RCA elections.
