Exciting teenage batsman Prithvi Shaw has been selected in the Mumbai squad for their Ranji Trophy semi-final against Tamil Nadu, starting on 1 January at Rajkot.
The 17-year-old was included in place of opening batsman Kevin d’Almeida, who had a pretty forgettable outing against Hyderabad in the quarterfinal – scoring just nine and one run in the two innings respectively, and dropping a regulation catch in Hyderabad's second innings – The Hindu reported on Wednesday.
Shaw is the only change in the 15-member Mumbai squad that beat Hyderabad by 30 runs in the quarterfinal at Raipur.
“All the selectors consulted with the coach and the captain and felt that we should reward Prithvi for his performances. The final combination will be decided depending on the conditions in Rajkot,” Milind Rege, Mumbai's chief selector, was quoted as saying in the report.
Shaw shot to fame with an innings of 546 runs off 330 balls in a Harris Shield match in 2013. Playing for Rizvi Springfield, he hit 85 fours and five sixes in his marathon knock, which set the record for the highest score by an Indian batsman in minor cricket.
He was also part of the Indian U-19 team, under the tutelage of Rahul Dravid, which recently won the Asia Cup. He opened the batting in the tournament, scoring 75 runs in two innings.
Shaw, along with Armaan Jaffer, is considered to be a future star, who would take the Mumbai legacy of batsmanship forward, and has even been compared to Sachin Tendulkar.
Shaw's inclusion in the Mumbai team came following injuries to key members Akhil Herwadkar and Shubham Ranjane. Superstar batsmen Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane had also not conveyed anything on their availability. Mumbai is also hamstrung by the injury to pace spearhead Dhawal Kulkarni.
