Even if you consider just the English Premier League, £630 million were spent on player transfers in the 2013 summer window. Add to this Spain, Italy, Germany and France — and the numbers are simply mind-boggling.

While transfers are usually measured by money, price-tags are not a guarantee of the success of the player at a club.

We’ve considered price-tags, which team the player is moving to, the potential of the team and his current form to bring you the top five transfers of this summer.

Neymar - from Santos to Barcelona for £47 million: Barcelona, who already have the spectacular Lionel Messi, have now also got the Brazilian equivalent of the World Player of the Year. A Brazilian from the right, an Argentine from the left, creating waves in attack? Yeah, that’s what we’re talking about. It’s just brilliant and even though Neymar is slowly getting fit for European football, he’s got the first-goal monkey off his back and produced some flashes of genius. This is the move that will help Barca break stubborn defences — something they couldn’t do last season against Bayern Munich.

Mesut Ozil - from Real Madrid to Arsenal for £42 million: One of the most potent attacking midfielders in the world will ply his trade in England. This, after being snubbed by the likes of Edinson Cavani, Radamel Falcao and Gonzalo Higuain, is a huge boost to the league and to Arsenal too. It’s a statement of intent from the Gunners, and brings an end to their policy of making mediocre wheeler-dealer purchases. Ozil’s form is never in question — he’s Europe’s top assist getter over the last three seasons. Phenomenal.

Gareth Bale - from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid for £85 million: Once again Real Madrid have broken the world transfer record for a player they’ve chased all summer. In Bale, Real now have a man who can stun defences with his raw pace and power. His main strength seems to be running with the ball without falling over, and at great speed. That, and a ridiculous left-foot. There are doubts over whether he’ll succeed in Spain, but Bale’s a man who always performs against the odds. Expect the same this season.

Edinson Cavani - from Napoli to PSG for £55 million: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Lucas and Cavani all in one team. Staggering, if you simply consider the wealth of attacking options the French champions already have. They’ve also signed Marquinhos in defence and he’ll play alongside arguably the best defender in Europe — Thiago Silva. Cavani was prolific with Napoli last season (38 goals in all competitions) and he’s already netted twice for PSG. That Champions League bid has just got stronger.

Isco - from Malaga to Real Madrid for £25 million: He gets here for the sheer start he’s had with Madrid. Three matches, three goals, one assist… boom! Isco’s just 21-years-old and he can only get better with the players around him. Madrid needed to lighten the burden of goal-scoring from Cristiano Ronaldo, and Isco hitting them from midfield will help that way. Add to that the Bale signing. Isco is already knocking on the Spanish senior team door. Click here to read his comments after his move to Madrid.

The signings of Radamel Falcao (to Monaco for £50m), Mario Gotze and Thiago (to Munich for £54m combined), Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente (£8m combined to Juventus), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Henrikh Mkhitaryan (£35m combined to Dortmund), Gonzalo Higuain (to Napoli for £35m), Paulinho, Erik Lamela and Roberto Soldado (to Spurs for combined £70m) are also worth keeping an eye on.
