Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat was on Wednesday disqualified from her women’s 50 kg wrestling final bout against USA’s Sarah Ann Hildebrandt at the 2024 Paris Olympics, after being overweight by 100 grams. As a result of Phogat's disqualification from the Olympics final , Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzmán, who lost to Vinesh in the semi-finals on Tuesday, will play the final against Hildebrandt on Wednesday.
“VINESH Vinesh failed the second day weigh-in. According to the article 11 of the International Wrestling Rules, VINESH Vinesh will be replaced by the wrestler who lost against her in the semi-final. Therefore GUZMAN LOPEZ Yusneylis will compete in the final. Repechage SUSAKI Yui (JPN) vs LIVACH Oksana (UKR) will becom Bronze Medal Match,” the International Olympic Committee said in its statement.

Article 11 of the International Wrestling Rules states the following:
a) If an athlete does not attend or fail the weigh-in (the 1st or the 2nd weigh-in), she/he will be eliminated from the competition and ranked last, without rank.
b) “If one (or more) athletes qualified for the repechages and/or finals don’t attend or fail the weigh-in, the athlete(s) (who successfully passed the second weigh-in) will move to the next round in his(their) part of the bracket.
Vinesh had begun her wrestling campaign at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday with a 3-2 win over Japan’s Yui Susaki, who had not lost against a non-Japanese opponent in 82 matches prior to the loss against Vinesh.

She then defeated Ukraine’s Oksana Livach 7-5 in the quarter-finals, before thumping Cuba’s Guzman 5-0 in the semi-finals later on Tuesday. Vinesh was to become the first Indian woman wrestler to reach an Olympic final, but as a result of her disqualification, she will finish the competition in last place without a rank.
