Paris Olympics 2024: Why Reetika Hooda lost the wrestling quarter-final despite the match ending 1-1

Reetika Hooda’s impressive Olympic debut was halted in the quarter-finals after she went down fighting to the No.1 seed Aiperi Medet Kyzy of Kyrgyzstan on Saturday in Paris 2024. The women’s freestyle 76kg match was tied 1-1 at the end of the six-minute period but Kyzy was declared as the winner using ‘criteria’.

As per the Last technical point(s) scored criteria, whichever wrestler is the last to score a point in the match is declared the winner. In the Reetika Hooda vs Aiperi Medet Kyzy bout, the Kyrgyzstani was the last to score a point hence she was declared the winner.

While losing a match despite a tie is disheartening, even more disappointing for Reetika was the fact that both wrestlers earned one point each only through a passivity warning and it wasn’t as if Kyzy, despite being the No.1 seed, was able to dominate the 22-year-old Indian grappler who is making her debut at the Olympics.

Reetika can still hope for a medal, however, although it will not be gold or silver. The wrestler from Haryana will be allowed to take part in the repechage round for bronze if Kyzy manages to reach the final of the women’s freestyle 76kg event.

The repechage matches will take place on Sunday.
