Who is Arjun Babuta, the Indian shooter who finished fourth at Paris Olympics?

Arjun Babuta narrowly missed a medal at the Paris Olympics 2024 after finishing fourth in the 10m air rifle final. Here’s everything you need to know about the Indian shooter.

Indian shooter Arjun Babuta missed a Paris Olympic 2024 medal by the barest of margin on Monday when he shot a 9.5 on his last attempt to finish fourth in the men’s 10m air rifle final. The shooter would have won at least a bronze if he had shot 10.5.

Eventually, he finished fourth in the air rifle final with a total score of 208.4 after 20 shots, while Croatia’s Miran Maricic took bronze with 230 from 22 shots.

China’s Lihao Shen registered an Olympic record of 252.2 for the gold medal and the silver went to current world champion Victor Lindgren (251.4) of Sweden.

Babuta had scored 630.1 in the qualification round to finish seventh place. The top eight shooters in the men’s and the women’s events progress to the finals.

Who is Arjun Babuta?

Born on 24 January 1999, Babuta hails from the Jalalabad region of Punjab which is near the Pakistan border. After completing his primary education in his hometown, Arjun moved to Chandigarh as his father worked with Indian Railways. He studied BA Honors at DAV College in Chandigarh.

After a meeting with Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, he was introduced to Bindra’s coach Colonel JS Dhillon in 2013. Dhillon suggested Arjun take up rifle shooting which began with the 10-meter air rifle event.

Arjun won his first medal at the Chandigarh State Shooting Championship in 2013.

After winning multiple medals at the junior level, Arjun entered the National Shooting Team in 2015 and was selected for the Junior National Rifle Shooting Team in 2016.

In one of the shooting events in the Czech Republic in 2016, he managed to get his career-best score of 632.4 points in the qualifying game. This inspired his confidence and he regularly scored above 620 points on most occasions. In 2018, he suffered from back pain and other health issues and was forced to take rest. However, he still continued playing the domestic circuit. In the Khelo India tournament, he managed to get a bronze medal. Arjun made a stronger comeback in 2022 winning back-to-back medals at World tournaments.

World Championship, Cairo (2022): Gold medal in 10m Air Rifle team event
