That brings us to the end of our coverage of Day 12 of the Paris Olympics, and boy was it a disappointing one for the Indian contingent — starting with Vinesh Phogat getting disqualified and ending with Tokyo 2020 silver medallist Mirabai Chanu becoming the latest Indian to finish fourth in Paris.

Athletics

Mixed Marathon Walk Relay (Medal round): Priyanka Goswami and Suraj Panwar – did not finish

Men’s High Jump (Qualification): Sarvesh Kushare – 2.15m (three misses in 2.20m). Does not qualify

Women’s 100m Hurdles (Round 1): Jyothi Yarraji – seventh in her heat with time of 13.16 seconds. Goes into repechage round

Women’s Javelin Throw (Qualification): Annu Rani with best throw of 55.81m. Does not qualify

Men’s Triple Jump (Qualification): Abdulla Aboobacker Narangolintevida and Praveen Chithravel fail to qualify after registering best attempts of 16.49m and 16.25m respectively.

Men’s 3,000m Steeplechase (Final): Avinash Sable finishes 11th with a timing of 8:14:18.

Golf

Women’s Individual (Round 1): Aditi Ashok is tied 13th and Diksha Dagar is tied 7th after Round 1 of the women’s individual golf tournament.

USA’s Sarah Hildebrandt wins gold in the women’s 50kg event in wrestling! The same event in which Vinesh Phogat is currently fighting for a joint-silver after being disqualified for being overweight.

Hildebrandt was supposed to fight for gold against Vinesh, but instead faces Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman, whom the Indian had defeated 5-0 in the semi-finals.

Guzman wins silver for now, and might have to share it with Vinesh depending on CAS’ ruling tomorrow.

Japan’s Yui Susaki and and China’s Ziqi Feng win bronze after defeating Ukraine’s Oksana Livach (10-0) and Mongolia’s Otgonjargal Dolgorjav (6-4) respectively.

Mirabai fails to lift 111kg in her first attempt! She had brought it up to chest height without much trouble but was in the final step, where she had to hoist the barbell above her head, which she couldn’t quite nail.

She clears 111 in her second attempt though, taking her combined score to 199 — at par with China’s Zhihui Hou.

On the morning of the first gold medal match for a female Indian wrestler, Phogat failed the weigh-in by 100 grams. The same weigh-in she had cleared just a day earlier before the three grueling bouts.

UWW president Nenad Lalovic said he feels sorry for Vinesh but rules will be followed in her case.

“We have to respect the rules. I’m so sad what happened to her. She was overweight, even though by a small margin but rules are rules. The weigh-in is public and all the athletes are there. It’s impossible to let someone to compete who doesn’t make the weight,” Lalovic said.

Lalovic also said that the chances of Vinesh leaving with at least a silver medal were impossible. “It is impossible because the brackets are changing. Everything is changing. Wrestlers Vinesh Phogat and Antim Panghal will take the mat on Wednesday (August 7) at the Paris Olympics. Phogat targets India’s first-ever gold medal in wrestling in what has been a staggering journey for her in the last two years. Panghal, first wrestler to book Olympics quota, takes on Zyenep Yetgil.

Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will look to make it two medals in two Olympics as she gets her campaign up and running in the women’s 49kg category.

Also getting underway on the day is women’s golf with Aditi Ashok, who came narrowly close to a medal in Tokyo, teeing off alongside Diksha Dagar.

There are host of athletics events also on offer today. Things start off in the marathon race walk mixed team event with the highlight being Jyothi Yarraji in women’s 100m hurdles.
