Avinash Sable had failed to qualify for the final at the Tokyo Olympics after ending seventh in his heats. He was, however, the fastest non-qualifier across all heats.

Avinash Sable qualified for the final of the men’s 3000m steeplechase at the Paris Olympics 2024 on Monday with an impressive performance in Round 1. Sable clocked a timing 8:15.43s to finish fifth in Heat 2 of the men’s 3000m steeplechase and directly qualify for the final. The top five runners from each heat qualify for the final.

The men’s 3000m steeplechase final will take place on 8 August at the Stade de France.

Sable led the race for the first two and a half minutes before he was overtaken by Abraham Kiwiot of Kenya and Samuel Firewu of Ethiopia.

Sable was overtaken by Ryuji Miyura of Japan at the midpoint of the race.

In the second half of the race, Sable jumped back to the second spot before dropping to fifth after a poor water jump. He then once again climbed up to third before going back to fifth.

He slowed down in the final stretch after it became clear that he would qualify for his first Olympics final.

Sable, 29, holds the national record of 8:09.91s which he clocked at the Paris Diamond League earlier this year to finish sixth.
