Here are the stats from the match: - A last gasp goal from Silvestre Varela saved Portugal from getting knocked out of the World Cup as they drew 2-2 with USA. Portugal have a shaky record in World Cups having won just one of their last nine games in the tournament. Their last win was against North Korea in 2010. Since then, they have drawn four and lost four. - USA have a major problem in their defense, they have kept only one clean sheet in their last 11 World Cup games. Reuters[/caption] - The United States defense has been even worse against European opponents, against whom they have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 16 games. - Jermaine Jones’ goal to draw USA level meant that USA had scored for the eighth game running in World Cup, which is also their joint-best scoring run in the tournament’s history. - Varela’s last minute header means the USA have not won consecutive World Cup games for 84 years. They did it for the first and only time in 1930. - Cristiano Ronaldo has the most number of caps for Portugal in the World Cup - 12. - Nani gave Portugal the lead in the fifth minute, it was the sixth goal by a Manchester United player in this tournament. Bayern Munich leads the tournament with nine. - Jermaine Jones’ equaliser was his first goal in his last 27 games for USA. - Jones’ goal was measured at 28.4 yards which is the longest open play goal for USA in the World Cup in the last 50 years. - Clint Dempsey scored USA’s second goal to give his team the lead in the 81st minute. It was his fourth World Cup goal for USA. He is now the joint-second highest scorer for USA in the competition. Only Landon Donovan, with five, has more. - Varela earned a crucial point for Portugal as he scored deep into extra time, 90+4:33 to be precise.
