Neeraj Chopra Diamond League Final Highlights: Neeraj Chopra finishes 2nd again as Julian Weber is crowned champion

The German certainly will be one to keep an eye on in the World Championships in Tokyo next month, and it’s safe to say that Neeraj Chopra faces quite the challenge defending his title!

Here’s how the Indian javelin star has fared in Diamond League Finals since his victory in Zurich in 2022 with an 88.44m throw:

Eugene 2023: 2nd (83.80m)

Brussels 2024: 2nd (87.86m)

Zurich 2025: 2nd (85.01m)

Germany’s Julian Weber is crowned champion after thoroughly bossing the event, while India’s Neeraj Chopra and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott finish second and third respectively, the former being the only athlete besides Weber to breach the 85m-mark tonight!

Weber absolutely demolishes his competition in Zurich, registering the top four throws and winning by a margin of six-and-half metres! He finishes with a throw of 88.66m in his sixth and final attempt, which happens to be his third-best of the evening!

The German certainly has put down the marker on next month’s World Championship with his clinical performance tonight!

Chopra, however, will be disappointed with the gap between him and Julian Weber, who is ahead by six-and-a-half metres and had breached the 90m-mark twice tonight!

Wieland’s 81.29m throw in his final attempt, however, isn’t enough for him to move out of the bottom of the table, with Moldova’s Andrian Mardare staying ahead despite signing off with 77.28m, thanks to his 81.81m throw in his second attempt.

Kenya’s Julius Yego’s next and he commits a foul while 2024 champion Anderson Peters finishes with 78.77m.

The Indian’s performance has dipped sharply after a promising start and Weber’s hardly facing any competition at the moment in Zurich. But never say never…

Boy is this turning out to be a forgettable evening for the two-time Olympic medallist, who is in danger of finishing outside the top-two in an event for the first time since the Kuortane Games in June 2021!

The Indian’s the only one to foul in the fifth round of throws, in which leader Weber registers 86.45m – the third best throw of the evening!

Here’s how things stand after five rounds:

Also fouling in the fourth round of throws is Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott, who remains ahead of Chopra by 60cm with a best effort of 84.95m. Current leader Julian Weber registers 83.66m in his fourth attempt, and it appears he’s put everything in his first two attempts.

Here’s what the standings look like after four rounds of throws:

Switzerland’s Wieland starts with a 71.06m throw, while Mardare and Yego gradually keep increasing the numbers, registering 75.94m and 79.32m respectively. Peters, who had won the Diamond League last year, registers 79.20m in his fourth attempt to remain fourth on the standings.

Weber and Chopra, incidentally, are the only ones in the seven-man field to foul in the third round of throws.

No hat-trick of 90m throws for the German at the Letzigrund Stadium, although that hardly matters in the overall standings, where Weber continues to enjoy a massive lead over Walcott and Chopra!

Kenya’s Julius Yego, who had competed at the inaugural Neeraj Chopra Classic in Bengaluru last month, registers his best attempt so far in the form of an 82.01m throw.

Weber, who had beaten Chopra to the top spot in Doha, remains firmly on top and is already an early favourite for the title!

The standings remain unchanged for now with Julian Weber firmly in the lead after back-to-back 90m throws and Keshorn Walcott and Neeraj Chopra second and third respectively, both yet to breach 85m so far.

The Indian knows it soon as the javelin leaves his hand, his face barely showing any sign of joy. He remains third, trailing the second-placed Keshorn, who registers a throw of 79.91m in his second attempt.

And this time the German throws slightly further, registering 91.51m in his second attempt to remain firmly on top of the standings for now! He’s looking unstoppable at the moment!

Let us, however, not forget the fact that while Chopra has breached the 90-metre mark only once so far, Grenada’s Anderson Peters has done that quite a few times in his career.

Chopra’s among the top three at the moment, but will have to produce his best throw ever if he is to win the Diamond League for the second time in his career.

He certainly appears confident of having sealed the title in his very first attempt, though it remains to be seen how Neeraj Chopra responds from hereon.

The German, who had beaten Chopra in the Doha DL meet in May, starts off with a superb 91.37m throw! That’s further than Chopra’s career-best throw of 90.23m, which he incidentally had registered in the very same Doha meet.

Chopra, meanwhile, occupies the third spot for now after registering 84.35m in his first attempt.

“A lot of people used to ask about the 90m mark. Some also said it won’t happen because since 2018, I have reached so far and been hitting 88-89m marks. Finally, not for me but surely the burden of the Indian fans has gone away now that the 90m is crossed. I feel I can do better and we will do it this year,” Chopra told _RevSportz_ after conquering the hurdle in Doha.

“I had belief. I needed to know how to cross 90m and now I know that. So just like I consistently threw 88-89m, now I will try to target 90 and 90+ throws,” he added.

Even though Neeraj is among the favourites to win the title in Zurich, the men’s javelin final will not be easy. The event will feature some of the best throwers in the world, with six of the seven participants ranked inside the top 10.

Neeraj Chopra participated in two DL meets this year out of the four that had men’s javelin throw among its events. Here are the results:

Doha, 16 May – 2nd (90.23m)

Paris, 20 June – 1st (88.16m).
