It’s been a season of second-placed finishes for Neeraj Chopra. In the Doha and Lausanne Diamond League meets, as well as in the Paris Olympics and now in the Diamond League final.

Grenada’s Anderson Peters accounted for two of those heartbreaks, beating him in Lausanne as well as in the DL final in Brussels.

On two of those occasions — Paris and Lausanne — Chopra was beaten by throws in excess of 90 metres, the feat of which continues to elude him.

The 26-year-old will be hoping for a better run next year, in which he will be hoping for a second consecutive gold medal at the World Championships that will take place in Tokyo.

Peters fails to breach the 85-metre mark for the first time in the final! That, however, does not dislodge him from the top spot as Chopra’s fifth throw measures 83.30. The Indian has just one more attempt to seize the top spot and win the Diamond League for the second time in three years!

Talk about going from bad to worse — Weber fouls in his fifth attempt after a gradual decline in the distance covered in each of his four previous attempts.

Also getting an ‘X’ against his name in the fifth round of attempts is local favourite Timothy Herman.

No Indo-Pak showdown in the Diamond League final in Brussels tonight as Chopra’s rival Arshad Nadeem failed to qualify after finishing at the eighth spot with just five points from just one event.

Chopra and the Pakistani athlete had quite the face off in last year’s World Championships final in Budapest as well as in this year’s Paris Olympics. It was Chopra and Nadeem winning gold and silver respectively in the Worlds last year, and the other way round in the Olympic final last month.

Neeraj Chopra had featured in two events in this year’s Diamond League — Doha (10 May) and Lausanne (23 August). The double Olympic medallist finished second on both occasions.

In Doha, he fell short of Jakub Vadlejch’s throw of 88.38m by just a couple of centimetres to finish second. And last month in Lausanne, Chopra couldn’t win the event despite putting in a season-best throw of 89.49m, thanks to Anderson Peters’ 90.61m effort.

Can Chopra win the final in Brussels after finishing runner-up twice? Preferrably with a throw that’s in excess of the 90-metre mark?

Neeraj Chopra, Diamond League 2024 Men's Javelin Throw final LIVE

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Diamond League 2024 men’s javelin throw final in which double Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra will be aiming to win the tournament for the second time in three years.

Can Chopra make up for the relative disappointment of missing out on gold in the Paris Olympics last month? We’ll find out soon enough!

Diamond League 2024, Men’s Javelin Throw Final: Neeraj Chopra will be hoping to make up for missing out on gold in the Paris Olymipcs by emerging triumphant in the Diamond League final in Brussells on Saturday.

Chopra had won a second consecutive Olympic medal in August, winning silver with a throw measuring 89.45m that was his season-best effort at the time.

The Tokyo 2020 champion had breezed into the final in just one throw measuring 89.32m, and would have won a second consecutive gold had it not been for Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem breaching the 90-metre mark twice and winning the event with a record-breaking 92.97m throw.

The 26-year-old had participated in two events in this year’s Diamond League, finishing second in Doha as well as in Lausanne. Chopra threw a distance of 89.49m in the latter, bettering his own season-best set in the Paris Olympics, only to be beaten by yet another competitor throwing in excess of 90 metres.

In this case it was Grenada’s Anderson Peters who had collected bronze in the Olympics and won the Lausanne event with a throw of 90.61m.

Chopra had previously been crowned Diamond League champion in the 2022 final in Zurich and finished runner-up the following year in Eugene. Not only will he be aiming to win the prestigious event for the second time in three years, he will also be hoping to breach the 90-metre mark that has eluded him his entire career.
