Nick Kyrgios is the name on everybody’s lips after he stunned world No 1 Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon on Tuesday — entering the quarters on his first appearance at the All England Club for a grand slam. Here are five things you need to know about one of tennis’ most promising stars.
- Kyrgios is the first man to reach the quarter-finals on Wimbledon debut since Florian Mayer in 2004 and at 19 years and 70 days, is the youngest player to reach the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam since Bernard Tomic achieved the feat at 18 years and 255 days at the 2011 Wimbledon.
- Kyrgios is the lowest-ranked player to defeat Nadal since No 690 Joachim Johansson at 2006 Stockholm. The last player ranked outside the top 100 to defeat a world No 1 at a slam was Andrei Olhovskiy, who beat Jim Courier at Wimbledon in 1992.
- Kyrgios is also the first teenager to defeat a world No 1 at a Grand Slam since Nadal achieved the feat when he defeated Roger Federer at the French Open in 2005. And we all know what Nadal went on to achieve.
- Though Kyrgios is Australian, neither his mother or father hail from the country. In fact, he is the son of a Greek father, Giorgos, and a Malaysian mother, Norlaila but plays for the country of his birth.
- While Nadal has won 64 career titles and $70,505,136 in prize money, Kyrgios’ winnings add up to 1/300 of the sum at $235,000 total with no titles thus far. The money and the titles may change if he keeps his run going — which also involved beating 13th seed Richard Gasquet in the 2nd round of the Wimbledon.
- Kyrgios saved the most match points in a Wimbledon game since 1966 when he saved survived nine of them against Gasquet in his 3-6 6-7 6-4 7-5 10-8 win.
