My name is Mohammad Kaif, and I'm not a sharpshooter, says India cricketer

India cricketer Mohammad Kaif cleared the air over confusion between him and a Bihar-based sharpshooter with the same name, stating that ’not every Mohammad Kaif is a cricketer". The confusion between the two arose when the wanted criminal was seen in the company of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Shahabuddin, who was released on bail after serving 11 years in prison on various charges. Kaif, the sharpshooter, is one of the two suspects in the murder of journalist Rajdev Ranjan in Siwan. His family was seen protesting against the police attaching his property in his hometown of Siwan, where one protester was seen holding a banner that read “cricketer mo. kaif ko insaaf do (award justice to cricketer Mohammad Kaif).” Kaif, the cricketer however, took to Twitter to clear the confusion caused by the identical names. “I am not the shooter u r referring to.I m training fr the Cricket season ahead wid #Chattisgarh. Verify to karlo yaar,” Kaif wrote on his Twitter handle on Sunday. Kaif, who is a veteran of 13 Tests and 125 ODIs, later put up another post on the microblogging website on Tuesday, where he added: “My name is @MohammadKaif but I m not that Sharp Shooter. Me&family getting lot of calls.M playing only with bat&ball”. “I don’t shoot with a gun, though still attempt to shoot the ball on the stumps. Will try to do so in the upcoming domestic season while leading Chattisgarh, who are playing Ranji Trophy for the first time,” added Kaif, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, in the second post.

Kaif, who was a regular member of the Indian side during the days of Sourav Ganguly’s captaincy, hasn’t played international cricket for a decade now. In the domestic circuit, he represented Uttar Pradesh in Ranji Trophy between 1997-98 and 2013-14, before moving to Andhra Pradesh for the next two editions. He will be leading the Chhattisgarh team in the upcoming season of India’s premier domestic tournament, which begins on 6 October.
