Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu made a stunning comeback on Monday, August 25 as she clinched the gold medal in the women’s 48kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Ahmedabad. Chanu lifted a total of 193kg - 84kg in snatch and 109kg in clean & jerk - to mark her return in style after a long injury break.
This was Mirabai’s first major competition since the Paris Olympics last year, where she narrowly missed out on a bronze medal. The 30-year-old had been struggling with multiple injuries in recent months, which forced her to miss several important events. Her gold in Ahmedabad is a major boost as she gears up for the upcoming international season.
Earlier in the day, Preetismita Bhoi clinched the gold medal in the women’s 44 kg category at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2025.

Chanu wins gold despite category change
With the new Olympic weight categories in force for the 2028 Los Angeles Games, the 31-year-old had decided to move down from the 49kg division to 48kg, a weight class in which she won her world championship title and two Commonwealth Games medals, but hasn’t competed in it since 2018.
Managing the weight was going to be a challenge, and Chanu herself admitted it. But the tenacious Manipuri, who has collected almost every accolade the sport has to offer, has embraced it. Working closely with chief national coach Vijay Sharma, she also fine-tuned her technique in pursuit of the elusive 90kg snatch.
“I’m not putting all my effort into Ahmedabad because I’m preparing for the World Championships. My biggest target is the Asian Games, where I aim to break world records and win a medal, as I have none there yet,” she had said on Saturday, a day before the competition.
