A 58-year-old Mike Tyson will be fighting YouTuber Jake Paul, who is 31 years younger, in a Netflix-backed mega match on 15 November (16 November in India) at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, United States. The Tyson vs Paul bout was originally to take place on 20 July this year but was postponed after the former heavyweight champions fell ill on a flight due to a stomach ulcer.
Nonetheless, Tyson is now ready for his professional boxing return, 19 years after his last match in 2005 when Kevin McBride beat him. Tyson also fought Roy Jones Jr. in 2020 but that was an exhibition match.
The upcoming match between Tyson and Jake Paul is anything but an exhibition match. It has been sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, which means the end result will be added to the athletes’ respective professional records.
Why was the Tyson vs Paul boxing match sanctioned?
Now, you must be wondering why Texas sanctioned a professional boxing fight between a 58-year-old and a 27-year-old. Most states in the USA would not have sanctioned such a fight with this big an age gap between the fighters, but Texas has approved the fight with a few conditions. Both boxers will be using 14-ounce gloves instead of the regular 10-ounce gloves used by heavyweight pugilists. The heavier gloves are expected to lessen the power of the punches and also slow down the fighting.
Also, there will be a total of eight rounds instead of 12 and each round will be only two minutes long not three.

Still, Tyson risks getting severe brain injuries…
Boxers take multiple blows to their heads during their professional career as opponents target the head to achieve a knockout. Tyson who already had a 20-year-long professional career must have been hit multiple times on the head. Now at the age of 58 when his reflexes are not the same, he risks receiving more hits to his head which could lead to neurological damage.
“When you talk about fighters who are now above the age of 40, you worry about two things,” Dr. Nitin K Sethi who works as a ringside physician told CNN. “One, I worry about the fighting in the ring itself, because is that fighter more predisposed to getting a severe traumatic brain injury under my watch while in the ring because of his or her age?
