Messy end: Ronaldo vs Messi debate turns fatal as Crisitiano's fan stabs friend to death in Mumbai

Football fanaticism spiraled out of control on Sunday morning, as a 34-year-old Nigerian was stabbed to death by his fellow countryman after a heated argument about who is the better player - Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

According to NDTV Sports, the incident occurred the morning after a party to celebrate Obinna Michael Durumchukwu's 34th birthday on Saturday night in Nallasopara (East). Most of the friends had left by the next morning while the owner of the house retired to the bedroom. Michael and another friend - the accused, Chukwuma Nwabu (22), continued to hang out at the house and were watching a football match.

Around 9.30 am, an argument broke out between the two drunk friends. Michael argued that the Barcelona star is the best player in the world while Nwabu made a case for Real Madrid's Ronaldo.

The debate turned physical with Nwabu allegedly throwing a glass tumbler at Michael, reports Mid-day. The tumbler missed Michael's head and hit the wall instead. Nwabu picked up a glass shard and, in a fit of rage, slit the throat of the victim.

The flat owner woke up due to the commotion and found Michael lying in a pool of blood. He called the police and the hospital, but it was too late. The Tulinj police arrived at the spot, arrested Nwabu and sent the body for postmortem.

"The fight which started from football debate ended up with a murder. We have arrested the accused under sections 302(murder) and 34(common intent) of the Indian Penal Code. We will produce the duo at Vasai court on Monday," Kiran Kabadi, police inspector, Tulinj police station told DNA.
