London: Manchester United salvaged a point with a 90th minute header from Ashley Young to claim a 3-3 home draw with Basel in their Champions League Group C match on Tuesday after the Swiss champions came from 0-2 down to lead 3-2. United seemed to be coasting with two goals in two first half minutes from Danny Welbeck, but Basel came back to lead with one from Fabian Frei and two from Alexander Frei, the second a 76th minute penalty. Tevez will never play for City again: Mancini [caption id=“attachment_94236” align=“alignleft” width=“380” caption=“Manager Roberto Mancini said Argentinian forward Carlos Tevez was “finished” and would never play for Manchester City again. Argentinian forward Carlos Tevez refused to play for Manchester City when Roberto Mancini told him to come on as a substitute, the club manager said on Tuesday. Mancini told reporters that as far as he was concerned Tevez was “finished” and would never play for City again. Mancini, looking visibly shocked, told a news conference: “I am really disappointed because it is Carlos. “This can’t happen in a top club — to refuse to go in to help his teammates. What I said to Carlos is between me, him and the team. But if we want to improve as team Carlos can’t play with us. With me, he is finished.” He explained that he asked the Argentinian to come on with 35 minutes to play telling him that if he came on they could change the result from their losing 0-2 position. Mancini said: “He refused to warm up and again refused to go on the pitch. If a player has a lot of money to play for Manchester City … he can’t play, never.” Tevez has had an uneasy truce with City since angling for a move away from the club this year, citing family reasons. He has only played one full match this season, in last week’s win over Birmingham City in the League Cup. Tevez denies refusing to play for City On Wednesday, Tevez denied refusing to come off the substitutes bench during his team’s defeat. “In Munich on Tuesday I had warmed up and was ready to play. This is not the right time to get into specific details as to why this did not happen. But I wish to state that I never refused to play,” Tevez said. The 27-year-old striker blamed his failure to appear on “confusion” on the City bench and apologised to the club’s fans for “any misunderstanding.” “I would like to apologise to all Manchester City fans, with whom I have always had a strong relationship, for any misunderstanding that occurred in Munich,” Tevez said. “They understand that when I am on the pitch I have always given my best for the club. “… there was some confusion on the bench and I believe my position may have been misunderstood. Going forward I am ready to play when required and to fulfil my obligations.” Kaka, Ronaldo score for Real Madrid In contrast to the stumbling English neighbours, Real Madrid, seeking a 10th European Cup success, also made it a maximum six points in Group D with a 3-0 win over Ajax Amsterdam with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Karim Benzema. Portugal forward Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 25th minute at the Bernabeu, finishing off a sweeping breakaway move. Brazil playmaker Kaka and France striker Benzema then struck either side of halftime. “It was a good win and puts us in a good position in the group,” Kaka told Spanish television. “We need to continue like this and I think we can seal the group very soon,” added the 29-year-old who was given a rousing ovation when he was substituted in the 75th minute. Inter Milan let a 2-0 lead slip at CSKA Moscow but recovered to win 3-2 with substitute Mauro Zarate scoring the winner as new coach Claudio Ranieri continued his winning start with the 2010 European champions. In the night’s other games, Napoli beat Villarreal 2-0 in Group A, Trabzonspor drew 1-1 with Lille in Group B, Benfica beat Otelul Galati 1-0 in Group C and Olympique Lyon beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 in Group D. The eight matches in Groups E-H will be played on Wednesday. Agencies
