Grandmasters Vidit Gujrathi and Divya Deshmukh were both presented with cash prizes of Rs 1 crore each following India’s historic run at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary in September, where the Open’s team as well as the Women’s team won gold medals. Abhijeet Kunte and Sankalp Gupta, the coaches of both players, received Rs 10 lakh each.
“The Indian team has achieved a historic feat by winning the gold medal in the 45th Chess Olympiad held from 10th to 23rd September, 2024. The team included state chess players Vidit Gujarathi and Divya Deshmukh, both of whom were presented with Rs.1 crore each by the Chief Minister @mieknathshinde, Deputy Chief Minister @Dev_Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister @AjitPawarSpeaks and their mentors Sankalp Gupta and Abhijit Kunte respectively on behalf of the state government. He was honored with an amount of Rs. 10 lakh and a medal. On behalf of Vidit Gujarathi, his father Dr. Santosh Gujarathi accepted the honor on behalf of Abhijeet Kunte, his wife Meghna Kunte and Sandeep Gupta, his father Sandeep Gupta, accepted the honour,” said a post on the official “X” handle of CMO Maharashtra.

While the Open team, that featured the likes of Vidit, Praggnanandhaa and D Gukesh defeated Slovenia 3.5-0.5 in the final round of the Olympiad, the Women’s Team that included Divya, R Vaishali among others got the better of Azerbaijan with a 3.5-0.5 score.
Swapnil, Sachin also honoured
Shooter Swapnil Kusale, who won bronze at the Paris Olympics, and Sachin Khilari, who clinched silver in shot put at the Paris Paralympics, were also felicitated by the Maharashtra government. Dipali Deshpande and Arvind Chavan, the duo’s coaches, were also honoured.
