Highlights IPL 2017, GL vs KXIP, cricket scores and updates: Punjab beat Lions by 26 runs

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:52 (IST)

That brings us to the end of our live coverage of Match 26 of Indian Premier League 2017. A good win for KXIP. Gujarat's bowling, the weaker side of their squad, did their job in this match, but their powerful batting line-up found themselves choked. Punjab finally got a win after a string of poor results. GL were, on the other hand, back to ending up on the wrong end of the result, after a fine away win at Kolkata in their previous match. Do join us for all live scores and updates from the second match of the Sunday double header -- a huge match at the Eden Gardens between KKR and RCB.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:46 (IST)

Hashim Amla adjudged the Man of the Match for his aggressive innings. He is also the holder of the Orange Cap now.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:34 (IST)

Solid win for Kings XI, albeit against poor opposition. The key was always going to be early wickets and they were able to curb the influence of McCullum, Finch and Raina. The spinners bowled well and controlled the middle overs to effectively seal the game and the seamers showed some improvement at the death, although the pressure was off. Maxwell will be pleased with the clinical nature of the victory but there is still plenty of room for improvement for Kings XI. For now they'll just be pleased to break their losing streak and claim victory on the road.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:33 (IST)

This is the second consecutive defeat for Gujarat Lions while chasing at Rajkot in IPL.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:32 (IST)

After 20 overs,Gujarat Lions 162/7 ( Dinesh Karthik (W) 58 , Basil Thampi 11)

Sandeep with the last over. The first delivery goes to the fence as Thampi squeezes an yorker length delivery to the fence. But that is not enough for GL. The GL batsmen try a few heaves, but can't get the ball away too far. Sandeep ends with a yorker as Punjab win comfortably.

Final result: KXIP beat Gujarat Lions by 26 runs.

Punjab got their campaign back on track with this win after suffering four losses on the trot and they have moved to the fourth spot on the table. But Hashim Amla has some fitness issues, which would keep KXIP worried.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:26 (IST)

After 19 overs,Gujarat Lions 153/7 ( Dinesh Karthik (W) 57 , Basil Thampi 3)

Mohit to bowl the penultimate over. Starts with the wide. Fine changes of pace. The GL batsmen swings and misses. Changes of pace has been Mohit's forte in this tournament this season. The last ball has Kathik going for a cut. But that ball was too close for the cut. GL need a six off every ball of the last over to win.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:22 (IST)

After 18 overs,Gujarat Lions 149/7 ( Dinesh Karthik (W) 54 , Basil Thampi 3)

Natarajan to bowl the 18th over. A couple of wides in that over, but otherwise a very tidy over, one that could be the turning point in the match. Just six runs from that over. That's very good from the younf Punjab bowler. Good changes of pace and length there. 41 needed off 12 balls now. An uphill task for GL.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:20 (IST)

After 17 overs,Gujarat Lions 142/7 ( Dinesh Karthik (W) 52 , Basil Thampi 1)

Sandeep to bowl the next over. The first ball is on the pads of Karthik and is turned round the corner for a boundary. The third ball goes the journey too. Tye tries to pull, but gets an outside edge that goes to the fence behind the keeper. Bit fortuitous that. Sandeep comes back to get Tye's wicket with a yorker off the fourth ball. That brings Thampi to the crease. The last ball fetches a boundary too as Karthik reverse sweeps. That's fifty for the GL keeper-batsman too. GL need 47 off 18 balls.

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:12 (IST)

OUT! Sandeep Sharma gets rid of Tye. A yorker right on target and it goes under Tye's bat. The batsman misses and the bowler hits. That shows the importance of atacking the stumps at the 'death'. GL 137/7

Andrew Tye b Sandeep Sharma 22(12)

Apr 23, 2017 - 19:09 (IST)

Good work by the spinners through the middle has really turned this game in Kings XI's favour. Cariappa in particular seems to have read the conditions well and mixed up his pace and extracted enough turn to cause problems for the Gujarat bowlers. Axar also bowled well and looked good when he slowed it down. Surely it's Kings XI's game now.

Preview: Motivated by the morale-boosting four-wicket win against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their last Indian Premier League (IPL) match, Gujarat Lions will be aiming to keep the momentum going when they face Kings XI Punjab at home on Sunday.

The Lions rode on skipper Suresh Raina's brilliant 46-ball-84 at the Eden Gardens on Friday to their second victory of the season while Kings XI will be eager to end their four-match losing streak at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium here.

On paper, there is not much to choose between the two teams even though Punjab, despite being on a losing streak, are placed fifth with four points while Gujarat are seventh with the same number of points.

For Gujarat, former New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum with 258 runs and Raina with 243 runs, are among the top five run-getters in the tournament so far.

Punjab will take solace from the fact that they scored a near 200 total (198) against the Mumbai Indians with South African Hashim Amla scoring a terrific hundred and skipper Glenn Maxwell also hitting some lusty blows.

However, the problem area for both the teams has been bowling which has let them down on most occasions.

Both the teams are heavily dependent on the Indian bowlers, who have failed to rise to the occasion when their teams needed them the most.

Punjab's opening bowlers -- Sandeep Sharma, Mohit Sharma and Ishant Sharma -- have all been smacked all around the park by the batsmen, specially in the last match against Mumbai Indians.

Mohit and Sandeep have been preferred by Maxwell in all the six matches and their economy rates have been a dismal 9.39 and 9.18 respectively.

Only left-arm spinner Axar Patel has somewhat redeemed himself with an economy rate of 7.31.

Gujarat, on the other hand, will be banking on their Australian pacer Andrew Tye, who has taken seven wickets in three games including a hat-trick at a decent economy rate of 7.08. Kerala youngster Basil Thampi's ability to ball yorkers at will, has been an advantage for the Gujarat side.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is yet to fire, having taken only one wicket in the four matches so far, while veteran Praveen Kumar's lack of pace and swing has meant he has been hit at an economy rate of 10.32 over five games.
