The sixth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games is set to commence on Friday, January 19. The event will be hosted across Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy until January 31. It is part of the Indian government’s Khelo India initiative, which has the motto of promoting different sports at the grassroots levels in the country. This year, the flagship event will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Chennai’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. More than 5,500 athletes from the 36 Indian states and Union Territories are set to compete at the 2024 Khelo India Youth Games. It is a team championship where each athlete from any state and Union Territory will contribute to the overall medal tally. When all the events are wrapped up, the team having the most number of medals will be adjudged the winner. Maharashtra and Haryana have dominated the previous seasons of the Khelo India Youth Games. The inaugural edition in 2018, which was then called the Khelo India School Games, saw Haryana clinch the title after finishing at the top of the medals tally. Maharashtra became the champions of the following two editions before Haryana reclaimed the silverware in 2022. Maharashtra will enter this year’s campaign as the reigning champions. The roster of the 2024 KIYG features 26 different sports, offering a total of 933 medals– 278 gold, 278 silver and 377 bronze. Squash is set to make its debut at the multi-sport under-18 meet this year. On the other hand, Silambam - a form of indigenous martial arts will also be part of the roster as a demonstration sport for the first time. At the 2024 KIYG, host Tamil Nadu has the largest contingent featuring 559 athletes. Meanwhile, Maharashtra will field a strong 451-member squad and Haryana has sent 491 athletes to compete at the event. The majority of the events will take place in Chennai, while gatka and kho kho will be held in Tricky and Madurai will host the Kalaripayattu events. Meanwhile, events like basketball and thang-ta will be conducted in Coimbatore.
